Emails moved to trash return to inbox

Hi,

My AOL emails (I know... I'm old:-) get funneled into my Mail app. Once in a while, I move large numbers of emails from the AOL inbox in my Mail app to the trash. But when I move more than about 15 at a time, they don't stay in the trash, but immediately bounce back to my inbox. This makes purging my inbox a slow process.

I used to be able to move hundreds to the trash at a time, and they would stay there. Alas, no more. How can I return to the good ol' days?

Any advice appreciated.
