Unlocking computer with Apple Watch

Since upgrading to Watch OS10, my watch will not unlock my computers. Both computers are set to allow the watch to unlock, and both are running Mac OS Ventura 13.6. I have restarted both computers after turning off the watch unlock in System Settings and restarted them, but while the computer waits for the watch to unlock it, the watch does not respond.

Hi mikel31556,

If you have restarted your Macs and Apple Watch and the issue persists, let's try to narrow this down and isolate it more by testing in safe mode and a new user account.

Safe mode prevents certain software from opening and also forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can actually resolve some issues. More information on starting to safe mode and steps to take after starting there can be found here: Start up your Mac in safe mode – Apple Support

"Before you begin

To start up your Mac in safe mode, you need to know what type of Mac you have.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
  2. Look at the information in the window to determine what type of Mac you have:
    • If you see an item labelled Chip, followed by the name of the chip, you have a Mac with Apple silicon.
    • If you see an item labelled Processor, followed by the name of an Intel processor, you have an Intel-based Mac.
  1. Use the corresponding set of instructions below to start up your Mac in safe mode.

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.
  4. On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

If the issue continues after the steps from safe mode, create a new user account (administrator) to see if the behavior happens there. This will let us know if it is system-wide or something within your user account: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac – Apple Support

Let us know what you find.

Cheers!

Hi mikel31556,

That is correct, you would. Being able to see if the issue occurs in another user account will help to identify if it is something that is affecting your entire system or just one particular user account. To do this, you'll want try to replicate the issue in that account. Once inside the Test Account, try to replicate the issue to determine if it just occurs in one account or on the whole computer.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.

OK. This is very weird. Early last week, the watch started to unlock the Mac Mini (M1 chip), but still would not unlock the newer MacBook Air (M2) chip. I was preoccupied (granddaughter's soccer games, Phillies/Braves game) over the weekend and did not finish setting up the test account on the MacBook Air. I just set down to do that, opened the laptop and heard my watch click and watched the computer screen change to my home screen. I don't know how it worked, but I'm back in business.
