My Apple Card was cancelled due to lack of use!?

I've held a zero balance on my Apple Card for a couple years now (been waiting for this latest round of M2 Max to come out). I picked up my phone the other day, and am informed that "due to inactivity, my Apple Card has been cancelled" and that it is now removed from my Apple Wallet.

Today, I furthermore discovered that this has dinged my credit (my credit to utilization ratio just shifted rather noticeably)!? I had NO outstanding balance, I've never been late, I've never had an incident whatsoever with it!

WTF Apple!?

All credit card companies close inactive (sometimes referred to as dormant) accounts. They do this because having a large Credit Limit cost banks money. Federal Reserve Bank regulations require that banks set aside >reserves< to cover potential losses should the account owner default.

You FICO score declined because you credit utilization across all accounts increased because the account was closed.

It’s not considered a best practice to open a lot of accounts with high credit limits if you don’t plan on regularly using a portion of the assigned limit.
