Updated to Sonoma and computer is slower than dial-up

I have a 2021 iMac and upgraded to Sonoma tonight. I've truly have no clue how we managed to use dial-up because I do not remember it being this slow for EVERYTHING! Typing this message took about 5 minutes to make it to this line because it continually stopped and gave a loading circle. Everything that opens at login took 10 minutes before actually opening, Safari has said (Not Responding) when I try to Force Quit. Absolutely nothing works unless I'm willing to wait 10 minutes for every single application. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Something is clearly wrong. So there is not too much guessing…

Install EtreCheck and post the report. Allow Full Disk Access.

I agree. @Dialbrain I appreciate you trying to help but I’m not comfortable installing something I’m unfamiliar with and giving it Full Disk Access.

I’ve been on the phone with Apple for over an hour and they’re having me downgrade back to Ventura. They said they’ve been on quite a few calls like this today and yesterday so it’s certainly a huge bug within Sonoma they need to work out.

Ok everyone so I FINALLY got everything to work. I recommend getting on the phone with Apple while doing this but the only thing that's worked has been to fully wipe the computer and send it back to factory settings, then re-install Sonoma and setup the computer all over again. I know it isn't fun and getting everything back up and running is time consuming, but having everything working perfect again is worth it. Make sure everything you need to have is backed up in the iCloud or an external hard drive then hop on the phone with Apple Help (1-800-275-2273) so that with anything that may pop up you've got a tech right there to go through the process with you. Hope this helps anyone still having trouble!

Have you shut down and restarted more than once since the upgrade...?

I would.

Mac Mini M1 here, really slow at first, somehow better now after letting all settle down since yesterday.

GPU (not CPU, but GPU) usage higher than I have ever seen, always above 50%.

Clean install from 2 days ago, just macOS, Logic Pro and Spotify, no drivers, no nothing.

I hope they improve the performance sooner or later, I should have not upgraded to Sonoma except Apple Support told me I had to upgrade to fix a bug which has not been solved yet anyway.

Windows like experience.

Try disabling new Wallpapers and Screensavers? I did

We are not Beta testers. I never signed for it. But you're right, something's crearly wrong.

But I never Allow "Full Disk Access" to any App, NEVER, EVER, and this will not be and exception. I better use a hammer on the Mac and start licking windows, and I don't recommend it to anyone.

I don't install unsigned Apps, never ever, except the one provided by Apple Support itself (yes, unsigned by Apple) and I reinstalled my Mac again without even restoring Time Machine backup two days ago before installing Sonoma.

Old BUG's not fixed, new Bugs there and everywhere, features working half a day, pfff....

same thing for me, after I upgraded to Sonoma on my 16" MacBook Pro M1 2021. Chrome won't load at all, Safari is slow slow slow it's not my wifi, speed test says download: 674.45mbps and upload: 352.22 yet it's like I have dialup!!! I have done all the suggested fixes twice... nada!!

I'm using my old 2017 13" MacBook Pro on Monterey and it works just fine

UPDATE!

So the problem still persists. What I have noticed is that my MacBook slows down whenever I’m using an external monitor, in this case my iPad Air. I thought that because I was using the wireless connection, that it may have been the problem, but even when using the USB-C cable to extend the display, my MacBook Air slows down. It feels like the processor is overloaded and the RAM memory is all ate up by apps and processes.

I’m really frustrated I cannot do my homework.

I’ve tried multiple work around a for over a week with Apple Techs as well. Tried downgrading to Monterey but once you download it the Sonoma system won’t actually allow you to install it unless you buy a USB drive that can hold 16gb minimum > transfer Monterey to USB > force disk to install Monterey from there.

I haven’t tried this method just because I’m not going out and buying a 16gb usb drive simply because Apple all of a sudden doesn’t know how to make a product.

At this point the best thing we’ve got to hope for is they hurry up already and give a new update to fix the bugs so many people are experiencing
