Disable Caps Lock Indicator on macOS Sonoma
A feature has been added to macOS Sonoma - the onscreen caps lock indicator.
While i am sure this may be useful for some, for me it is not, is there any way to disable it?

This feature is not useful for most users. Some of us use Caps Lock for the following reasons: 1) while playing games, 2) writing code, 3) writing scripts or other documents that will require the function. APPLE PLEASE REMOVE THIS ANNOYING FEATURE AS THIS DOES NOT HELP WHEN THERE IS ALREADY A LIGHT ON THE KEYBOARD!!!!!!!!!
Just to confirm, this single command issued in the terminal DOES permanently fix this annoying and poor interface design:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/UIKit.plist redesigned_text_cursor -dict-add Enabled -bool NO
Then reboot. On-screen caps lock indicator is no more!
Caps lock Sonoma crashes Archicad 26. Without fail.
I'm training myself to hold down the shift key while typing for letters, lifting for numbers and special characters. (Industry standard for architectural drawings are upper case.)
I'll probably give up and go into Terminal, but there are a lot of users even less comfortable than me "going under the hood".
Thank you for associating the two events! I had reported the missing cursor as a bug, unaware that it was associated with my disabling the onscreen Caps Lock indicator. Verified that the cursor comes back if re-enabling the indicator. Still seems like a bug, but for a much narrower audience.
This worked for me. It’s from The Mac Observer.
Paste into Terminal:
sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain
Enter your password.
Then paste
sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add 'redesigned_text_cursor:Enabled' bool false" /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/UIKit.plistand
Enter your pass again.
Restart your Mac.
No.
A fuller answer can be read in other posts in this thread. Apple can make it simple by including a toggle in System Settings. Until Apple makes it more simple, those who are uncomfortable with the methods that are in fact effective right now are urged to be patient.
Thanks for that @yochees. Very useful indeed. Just out of curiosity where did you find the info ? I am assuming from another blog/forum? I wish we could find these kinds of data officially from Apple directly...
Oooops. Spoke too fast. After a few seconds the Caps Lock popup showed up again. So this does not work for me. I'm on Sonoma 14.3
The commands I used in Terminal:
sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain
sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add 'redesigned_text_cursor:Enabled' bool false" /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/UIKit.plist
Then reboot.
Hi,
i have a MacBook Air M2, when i do this my Mac gets super laggy in games. Tested it twice after a full fresh install. The second i use this command and restart my games are very laggy and unplayable.
Any ideas?
This popup window is actually generated by my Logitech trackpad's driver. So I disabled it and now I finally have solved my issues. Thanks again for the Terminal commands to disable the blue icon as well.
False. Most people - of any age - don't have knowledge or desire to use terminal. Including myself.
False. Having caps lock on is not a mistake - like another poster who mentioned autocad, I do a lot of graphics and design work where the text stays in all-caps - ON PURPOSE - while we are trying to draw. And that stupid little arrow is constantly in the way of the drawing.

I didn't say anyone did have experience. I said it wasn't that hard. The instructions posted here have been pretty good.

I was responding to a specific person who had typed their response all in caps. I'm sorry that you don't understand sarcasm.
I do admit to being confused about why you are attacking a response made over six months ago to someone who isn't you.
THIS WORKED!!! It kept asking for a password, then saying password was invalid. I tried password again with CAPS LOCK off (my password is all numbers tho LOL) and it took the code. The blue arrow seems to have been banished back to the alternate universe from which it originated. Thank you !!!
I did report it. Perhaps soon a toggle will become available.
Please tell me someone already found a way to disable the indicator. Even if it's with a third party app.
