I am unable to make a Time Machine backup on my MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma

When my Mac attempts to make a Time Machine backup, I get the following error message (two lines):

"Backup Not Completed

Some of the files on your Mac cannot be backed up until Cloud Files syncing has completed."

This occurs absolutely every time my Mac attempts to make a Time Machine backup, now that I have upgraded to Sonoma 14.0 (23A344).

I am in the middle of help from a senior advisor at Apple and am expecting a callback very soon.

I had the same problem. After almost 10 hours, the Finder showed that the iCloud drive was synced. However, I still could not backup and received the same error message about syncing has to complete.

Hmmm.... I had made an alternate login on my computer that I used with a language I was studying. I had not logged into that user for several months.

I logged in to that user account, went to settings and TURNED OFF using iCloud for that user's account. I was warned that documents on the cloud would be deleted. Clicked okay. Logged out, logged in to my normal account and Time Machine backup started immediately. It appears that Time Machine was waiting for this "other" account to finish syncing to the cloud before it could complete a backup. ( Instead of turning off iCloud for this user, I could have waited for Finder to finish syncing this user's account, then logged out, log in to my normal account)

I had te same problem on my M1 MacBook Pro, after upgrading to Sonoma. Message:

"Backup Not Completed

Some of the files on your Mac cannot be backed up until Cloud Files syncing has completed."

This is my report of the steps I tried:

  • restart the Mac. No success
  • Shutdown - wait - Restart. No success
  • Log out of iCloud - Log in again. No success.
  • Looking at the iCloud Drive in Finder showed all files synchronised.
  • I was using a Standard account, tried restarting in Administrator account. No success.
  • With the help of Apple Support checked iCloud Drive synchronisation in Administrator account.
    • first message showed synchronisation complete 11 minutes ago. No success in backup
    • Then "miraculously" messages that iCloud was uploading and downloading files appeared!
    • Apple Support confirmed that iCould does synchronise in bursts.
  • Hence I let my computer synchronise overnight.
  • During the night, suddenly the backup started and succeeded!
  • Since then, no more issues with the hourly backups, works fine in the standard user account as well!

Conclusion: be patient until iCloud has fully synchronised! It can can take more than a day.

Hope this helps!

OMG. This was the solution. Thank you so much!!!

I kept getting the "Backup Not Completed. Some of the files on your Mac cannot be backed up until Cloud Files syncing has completed." with MacOS Sonoma, but only since a Time Machine restore.

But iCloud syncing was completed, so the error message was a lie.

Tried everything listed, spent hours online looking for solutions but what finally worked was disabling:

UpdaterStartupUtility from System Settings > General > Login Items > Allow in the Background

Yeah!!

Note: UpdaterStartupUtility is not some obscure extension. It is Adobe's update mechanism for its Creative Suite. Kind of incredible.

My problem is solved. The solution was two-fold.

First, I had to identify two obscure files listed under a System Settings preference pane, specifically

System Settings:General:Login Items

and there, in the list "Allow in the Background". Their names are

OSMessageTracer

and

UpdaterStartupUtility

The actual filenames are com.apple.installer.osmessagetracing.plist and com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist

A senior advisor from Apple support led me to look at Login Items. It was a somewhat tedious process of elimination that got me to the offending files. (I would be glad to post a how-to for an efficient means to undertake this process of elimination.)

Second, I turned off and then turned on again iCloud Drive, again following instructions from the senior advisor from Apple support. Turning off entailed opening again System Settings, then clicking on my name at the top of the left-hand column, then clicking iCloud, and then (under "Apps Using iCloud") iCloud Drive; and finally unchecking both boxes shown in the attached partial window shot.

After undoing the turnoff, I found that none of my files had been lost. Whew.

Hi Mike,

The instructions below pertain to macOS Sonoma 14.0.

One approach, probably the best, is to open

System Settings...

from the Apple Menu; then, click on

General

in the left-hand column, then click on

Login items

in the right-hand column, and then look through the items listed under the title

Allow in the Background

For me, the two culprits were listed there as

OSMessageTracer

and

UpdaterStartupUtility

The action I took was to toggle off both those items. (A toggle "switch" for each "Allow in the Background" item is located at the right edge of the window.)

Unfortunately, I suspect that not too many other users will find those particular items in the "Allow in the Background" list. If that applies to you, you might try the following.

First, take note of which items in the "Allow in the Background" list are toggled on. (A window shot or two is a good way to accomplish that. For instructions, see Take a screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support).

Then, toggle off all items in the list, or perhaps all those that look suspicious or that you cannot identify.

Then, restart your Mac and see if your problem has disappeared. If it has not disappeared, then these instructions are useless, and you should just toggle on again all the times you toggled off, and restart.

If on the other hand your problem has disappeared, then hunt for the culprit item(s) systematically, perhaps as follows: toggle back on about half the items you previously toggled off, take note of which items you toggled back on, restart your Mac, and see if your problem is still gone. If your problem is still gone, then the culprit item(s) are among the items you previously toggled off but have not yet toggled back on. Etc etc etc. I think you will see what to do from here.

Some wizard out there may well have a more efficient approach than the binary-search-like method in the previous paragraph. Wizards, please speak up.

Thanks MIke!

I too had several other user accounts on my MacBook Pro that had not been signed into after upgrading to Sonoma. Logged into all three accounts and let iCloud do its sync thing. Only took about 5 minutes to get all in sync. Started another backup manually and it is now working. It seems this failure to back up / waiting to sync iCloud files is unique to Sonoma as I had not experienced it prior to Sonoma even though I had not logged into those other user accounts for quite some time.

I had the same issue all week. Followed all instructions I could find on the Internet on this, but nothing worked. I decided to do a test with another external harddrive and with another programme than Time Machine, called Carbon Copy Cloner (free for a month) to hopefully have one recent backup with Sonoma installed. It went flawless.

After that I dared to erase the external harddrive which kept refusing to do the job with Time Machine (never had that before). I used Disk Utility to erase and after that connected it as newly formatted (ASFP) drive to Time Machine again to see if the problem persisted. And guess what . . . now it works again. But it's not the most elegant way of course.

Plus . . . this may work for me but maybe not for others.

The 2 external drives I used are:

Seagate Portable Backup Plus 5 TB (the one refusing before erasing/reformatting)

Samsung Portable SSD T 7 1 TB

And I use an iMac 27 inch from 2020

A radical but succesful solution for me.

Just should not have been needed to do this ; )

Jim,

Ok, so this was a different issue, but the same result. It seems that after running the 14.1.1 update this morning some of the third party file sharing sites I use (OneDrive and Tresorit in particular) no longer had 'Full Disk Access'. Re-enabled that and TimeMachine is back running again.

Perhaps a fluke on my installation, but worth watching out for.

I solved the problem in a similar way as mjfleck2000

My account was showing on Finder that iCloud Drive was Synced with iCloud.

However I also have other user accounts in my mac that I barely use. So I logged in those accounts making sure everything was fine. In some cases iCloud Drive was off (Setting >> Apple Id >> iCloud >> iCloud Drive >> Off) nonetheless the system was waiting to revalidate the iCloud password.

After going through all my other user accounts, checking everything, and logging out, the back restarted as always in my normal account.

Hope this helps.

Jim,

I have been struggling with this issue too. You mention two specific Adobe files in your "Allow in the Background" options, neither of which I have on my system. However, I do have two other Adobe background items (Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and Adobe Creative Cloud). I turned them both off and TimeMachine bursts back in to life. I have now turned them both back on again and TimeMachine still works. This makes no sense to me, but I am very grateful for you pointing me to this.

You are a star.
