I am unable to make a Time Machine backup on my MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma

When my Mac attempts to make a Time Machine backup, I get the following error message (two lines):

"Backup Not Completed

Some of the files on your Mac cannot be backed up until Cloud Files syncing has completed."

This occurs absolutely every time my Mac attempts to make a Time Machine backup, now that I have upgraded to Sonoma 14.0 (23A344).

I am in the middle of help from a senior advisor at Apple and am expecting a callback very soon.

I had the same problem. After almost 10 hours, the Finder showed that the iCloud drive was synced. However, I still could not backup and received the same error message about syncing has to complete.

Hmmm.... I had made an alternate login on my computer that I used with a language I was studying. I had not logged into that user for several months.

I logged in to that user account, went to settings and TURNED OFF using iCloud for that user's account. I was warned that documents on the cloud would be deleted. Clicked okay. Logged out, logged in to my normal account and Time Machine backup started immediately. It appears that Time Machine was waiting for this "other" account to finish syncing to the cloud before it could complete a backup. ( Instead of turning off iCloud for this user, I could have waited for Finder to finish syncing this user's account, then logged out, log in to my normal account)

Tried every suggestion in this thread without success and then some such as reinstalls, using a new local drive, different user etc. Interestingly, I have two Sonoma Macs syncing the same iCloud account and backing up to the same Time Machine drive attached to an older Mac over WLAN.

The old Mac backups just fine (2019 Intel MacBook Pro). The new Mac (2023 M3 MacBook Pro) always fails with this 'iCloud syncing incomplete' nonsense.

I'd suggest to Apple to completely drop this check. Why is it there in the first place? To avoid backing up some incomplete or broken iCloud files? And to achieve this an essential system feature such as backup becomes completely disabled? Somebody on the Time Machine team must have their priorities extremely wrong!

I have the same problem and what is strange in my setup is that my Macbook Pro 13 2023 with Sonoma backsup to Time Machine without any problem while my Mac Mini M2 2023 also on Sonoma has this "icloud sync not ready" error. In addition i can not access my NAS (Thecus) from any Mac running Sonoma, authentication fails with "incorrect password". I can login from Ventura, Monterey and from any windows laptop (10 or 11) without any issue but not from Sonoma.

Apple, please fix this in next update.

After more investigation i think Sonoma has a problem with remote authentication.

Authentication fails with SMB shares as well as print server. I can not print to a shared printer in Sonoma because user/pass are always rejected and print job is stuck with "hold for authentication" error. Only workaround i could find for this is to create a user on the mac where printer is connected with same credentials as account on the MAC from where i start the printjob.

To be more explicit:

  • Sonoma Mac Mini 2023 with HP LaserJet printer attached on USB - account on my name (local + icloud)
  • Ventura MacbookPro - local account + icloud on my wife's name

Printing from MacbookPro is not possible as authentication with MY account credentials are always rejected. Cleared keychain and all passwords without any luck.

So i created a local user account on Mac Mini with my wife's credentials same name and same password that she has on her MacbookPro and now she can print.

My conclusion is : Sonoma is always sending local user credentials to authenticate to PrintServer regardless if you use a different account then local one.

No improvement with 14.1.2. iCloud is fully synched, now testing only on local drive, no other users on this machine, all background processes disabled.

I honestly cannot understand Apple's reasoning here. Why even should an incomplete sync completely prevent a system backup?

And today it got really strange. Even after disabling iCloud Drive, Time Machine still fails with the error message 'Some of the files on your Mac cannot be backed up until Cloud Files syncing has completed'.

Guess it's time to look for an alternate backup solution...

This is what I have found regarding the Time Machine Issue:

I have two homes. In each, I have a separate Time Machine backup disk. What seems to have happened with Sonoma: Time Machine is starting to report a false "Last Backup" (See the screen capture). "Seagate Portable Drive" is not the last backup. That disk is at my other home. "Beach House" is the last backup. If I "Browse Time Machine Backups," I see all the latest backups on the disk I am currently using (Beach House).

This misleading report began only after I upgraded to Sonoma.
