Finder stopped working after macOS 14 update

My MAC book pro system was on 13 latest version. But today I got a software update to 14. But after performing the update, the Finder is not responding at all. all the other app seems to work ok.

Someone please help urgently!

My system is Intel based.

Thanks.

Turning off iCloud Drive fixed the problem...

Come on Apple, please fix this and do something on Quality Control and Change Management. This is getting ridiculous

I have same problem. Finder don't appear ...

before upgrade to MACOS14 the finder crashed more time.

It is necessary that Apple provide to fix this core program.

In my apple ID don't appear icloud icon because this mac is under company control... not good solution provide in this thread. Necessary for Apple to give us an update as soon as possible.

I have a 2019 iMac and had similar issues. I even reformatted the MacHD, reinstalled Sonoma through the Recovery manager and restored from Time Machine - had the same issues (Finder, the entire system really, being unresponsive, not displaying wallpaper/black screen, etc.). IMO, all these issues are due to the system being busy with file reorganization & iCloud updates.

My advice would be to leave your Mac alone the rest of the day after updating and restart the next morning. Almost all of my issues were resolved. We are an impatient bunch and when the system is busy, continuous clicking hither and tither expecting something to happen makes things worse as you are just stacking/piling up commands to be executed. Sonoma has been running on my Mac since 9/30 and it's actually performing better and is faster than Ventura but I think most of this is due to the reformatting. Clean install is the way to go when major versions are released.

I have Unity projects in a folder Unity.nosync. After upgrading to Sonoma I wasn't able to copy folder from Unity.nosync, Finder shows an error. I disabled iCloud Drive in the Settings. Finder removed all folders, even my Unity.nosync, this folder also doesn't exist in the iCloud Drive Web because ".nosync" marks folder as not to sync (project is synced using GitHub).

Maybe the problem is related to this:

"problems with iCloud Drive, in some cases leaving Macs apparently trying to download the entire contents of their iCloud storage before they could work normally again"

https://eclecticlight.co/2023/10/25/macos-sonoma-has-changed-icloud-drive-radically/

(I do not use iCloud Drive and have not experienced this).

Installed 14.1 update, tried to enable iCloud Drive again. Same problems, can't copy files from MyFolder.nosync (error 43). Can't zip and copy folders from Documents folder. Tried to make a screenshot and it doesn't appear on a desktop. Disabled iCloud again. Try to create a folder in the Documents, doesn't appear. Reload Finder process from system meny, folder appears.

Most probably, an app not starting (or not responding) is because that app had not been updated correctly. It is trying to update itself over the internet, but can't so it doesn't respond correctly, or crash, or simply won't start. I am not sure, if Finder can be updated/upgraded separately, so you might have to to reinstall the macOS.

Remember updating any app/OS over the internet is risky, for not all the internet providers reliable as they appear to be. In some countries, the consumer is not at all protected, even in the so-called 1st-world countries.😏

Same issue here. Issues happens when I use Audition to save files to a remote folder on NAS or upload a file from local folder on Macbook Pro M1 2021 with Macos 14 Sonoma. The finder will soon go frozen and then everything related to Finder usage will be stopped. Forced reopen of Finder will not work. If you use active monitor to force close, the Finder will never be opened again which the only way to solve it is to reboot. (and rebooting after this issue is a painful process. Excel and words and local apps can't be saved!!!

我也遇到了同样的问题。我在使用Audition保存文件到NAS路径或者在本地app里使用上传功能的时候,会有一定概率触发这个bug。使用的设备是MacBook Pro M1 2021. Macos 14 Sonoma。

This happened to me late yesterday. My system slowed terribly, and I too, thought 'finder' problems, that didn't work. I did a search, came up with this thread.

I turned off iCloud after reading this, trying a number of other things, Safe Mode, etc.

Thanks for this, it worked for me.

My system it working fine. I'll check more tomorrow.

BTW-I use a Samsung 980 M.2 500G in a PCIe card for the System and Applications and a separate user drive for other files. This works great .2012 Mac Pr 5, with Sonoma

I looks like Apple Support has finally come through with a solution: If your user folder is stored on an external drive, the drive has to be formatted as APFS, if you want to use iCloud drive. Obviously making that change is a big deal (maybe you should just buy a new external drive), but once it's done, iCloud Drive works like it should...

You're kidding?!? Could you tell us where to find that info, wolfsk? Thanks for posting that.

It certainly is NOT a solution, though...and I was so disappointed that 14.1 didn't fix the problem. Disabling iCloud Drive worked for me on my M2 Mac Studio to stop the Finder from freezing when trying to move/copy documents, empty the trash, or even open some System Preferences...but I'd kinda like to have iCloud Drive back.

My user folders are on a 14TB external drive, but I don't particularly want to change the format to APFS; the new file system is optimized for SSDs, and apparently not as great with HDDs as HFS+. This really sucks.
