macOS Music - "Recently Added" no longer showing all entries

Since Mountain Lion and iTunes, there was a way to view all added entries since inception of the library, in chronological order based on the added-time. This is a wonderful way of traveling back in time through the years of music, on which years which music has been added, and re-discovering old tracks.

For a long time, this has been present under the "Recently Added" section in "Library".

Since macOS Sonoma, this is no longer the case.

"Recently Added" currently shows 60 albums on my library, and I suspect this is hard-limited to this number. I find no way of lifting this limit, nor do I find a replacement view.

Edit: Notably, this feature is still present on music.apple.com.

Is this an error on my part or did macOS Sonoma depart from this - to me - essential feature of the Music app?

Apple: please fix this. It's unacceptable to remove a long-time feature for no reason. At least leave it in as a toggle or option. iOS can still do it in the album view. Why can't my more powerful Mac?

This seems deliberate as is completely unacceptable. Why is Apple crippling its own software? Do they want to force us into their streaming service? If they push us too much with such anti-consumer behaviour, they'll end up pushing us into the competition's arms instead. Sheesh! I'm sending feedback through their website, but I'll feign ignorance and, treating this as a bug (even though we all know it isn't), give them a call as well.

When it comes to your local library, it adds ZERO stress to Apple's servers. Why should non-Apple Music users (i.e. Music.app users) be treated as second-class citizens just because they want to integrate the whole thing and save a few bucks in the process? Heck, even Spotify seems to handle local libraries just fine. Come to think of it, I might give it a go… If they are smart enough about it, they might actually steer users away from Music.app. That would be glorious karma…

I absolutely agree with this! ☹️☝️ I was extremely frustrated when I discovered this the first time I "upgraded" to Sonoma. I spoke to Apple Support, however there wasn't much help there... I had to revert back to Ventura because of battery issues amongst other problems and by doing that it brought back the Recently Added section. Then when the first update to the Sonoma OS came I once again tried the upgrade. Most of the other issues were gone including the battery problem I had, however the album artwork in the 'Unlimited Recently Added' format was gone again and now only displays a few rows... really disappointing as I find it hard to easily locate music and having it in that format made me easily recognise where I was in a span of time so to speak and therefore where to locate specific songs easily. I really really hope they fix this.... It was a great way of going back through time and memories of my life visually which I loved.

Try Cider. It does cost money (but it's inexpensive, less than $5), but it manages your Apple Music web interface with it and has some pretty great features. The 2.2 version works relatively well, and has the Recently Added section go to the beginning of the library. If Apple refuses to listen to its customers, I recommend moving that way. Otherwise there are things like Swinsian, Strawberry, and others that can utilize better interfaces that have the features we want for local music libraries. But Cider is the closest thing that works with your Apple Music subscription. Unsure if Cider can use only a local library, I think it is mainly through Apple Music, but if you upload your music library to an iCloud library, it'll work fine.

The awful thing about the difference between this issue and iOS is that at least in iOS' Apple Music app, you can sort Albums by Date Added. They have left it out for a stupid reason in MacOS, and truncated the Recently Added section. Gotta have one or the other, Apple— let us sort by Recently Added to the beginning of time or let us sort in Album View by Recently Added. Leaving this feature out is maddeningly stupid, and easy to fix.

OMG. I just updated to Sonoma and discovered this hideous example of "enshitification". I don't understand how developers look at a feature like Recently Added in the Music app and just decide to gut it into oblivion. Recently Added, the way it was, was incredibly useful. Now, with it only showing 60 titles, it's less than pointless. I upgraded this past summer to a brand new M2 Mini after slugging it out on my 2011 Mini for over a decade and went through **** trying to transfer my music library from iTunes to the new Music app. It was a nightmare that took weeks of fussing to finally figure out and resolve. Even at that, I found the new app significantly "dumbed down" compared to iTunes, and it would seem the slide just keeps on slipping.
