Updated MacBook Pro to macOS Sonoma, now battery drains quickly

Finder is a file manager. It will open in a new window (or a new tab) in the way you've set it in a given Mac computer, whether you use the fixed screen or more external screens. For example, Finder in my MBP will open in the Desktop and in any new window. The Desktop is the place I work on.

Any other Mac computer will have its own Finder, and will open the way it is configured there.

Yeah, that I get. What I mean is the *location* of these Finder windows, and which Desktop they show up on, is unpredictable on restarting the computer. Or rather, inconsistent.

Kind of a tangent to the overall thread, but just pointing out one (of many) reason why "just shut it down when you're done with it" isn't really a viable option as a workaround to this battery drain bug.

Finder opens right in the middle of the screen, or where I leave it when I am working. It doesn't matter where it opens as far as it works. The Finder works in Sonoma, as it did in Ventura and in Monterey. By the way, all apps open where I leave them on the screen when I work/use the MBP.

On the question of the "battery drain" it most probably happens due to the incorrect usage, I suppose, not giving enough rest for the battery and the MacBook. Sleeping while connected to power is not resting, even if the MacBook is quite cool in the morning. Apple never advocated that you should keep the MacBook connected to power all the time. Apple had created the optimised charging mode for those who do.

That's definitely not the case, or consistent.

Similarly, working with audio apps, there are many things which don't persist on restart (recording audio into a temporary buffer, which evaporates after startup, and many many more things like that).

But again, this is largely irrelevant to the discussion.

Interesting that it is narrowing down to wifi being on.

There's probably some broken telemetry in there that is just gobbling up battery the whole time.

Is anyone using/running little snitch or something similar to see if it's doing anything over network while "asleep"?

Not disputing that. Only saying it can be difficult to determine exactly what is causing the excessive CPU utilization & battery drain. I have listed the most likely sources though to look at.

This is a different kind of problem. When working on my MBP during the day there is no battery drain at all. But when put to sleep the battery drains from 70% to 0% in a few hours with wifi on. This doesn't happen with wifi off.

You better read to the end, all those 12 pages. the battery life has a connection to its draining. You'd also find very rarely someone with an Intel chip complains about this sort of thing. What;'s your battery state after ~ 3 years?

Sure, but did anyone gave a solution to get rid of the battery drain with Sonoma, other than reverting back to the older OS? It could just be the state of the battery in a given MacBook. Batteries can die without telling.

Apple has not yet addressed this issue, and it is crucial for them to resolve it in their upcoming updates for macOS Sonoma. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that they will prioritize this matter unless we draw attention to it.

I submitted feedback a month ago, but it appears that it won't capture their attention unless there's a substantial amount of feedback. Additionally, to submit feedback, one needs to join the developer program. To garner their attention, YouTubers and articles need to start discussing it. Consequently, I've contacted several YouTubers and news outlets to draw attention to this issue. Also I contacted apple support regarding this, they don't know anything about it.

As I've noted, mine is a 2020 Intel MBA.

After installing macOS Sonoma, I encountered some issues with certain apps. I promptly submitted feedback to Apple, along with a detailed report. After a few days, I received a response from them, which included instructions to follow and an inquiry about whether I was still experiencing the issues.
