Updated MacBook Pro to macOS Sonoma, now battery drains quickly

I updated my MacBook Pro this morning to macOS Sonoma. Everything was good at first and I really like the look and feel. But as soon as I took it off my charger to go to some meetings the battery dropped from 74% to 44% in about 5 minutes. Then as soon as I turned on WebEx the battery dropped from 44% to 7%.

Anyone else having battery drain issues with macOS Sonoma? Is it maybe just temporary from all the background activity similar to the phones?

One significant contributor to MacBook battery drain after updating to Sonoma or any other new OS is the background setup processes. These background activities like Spotlight reindexing, Photos synchronization, Time Machine backup operations, emails, messages and other app updates. When your MacBook is working on these tasks, it puts an additional burden on both the CPU and GPU, leading to increased power usage and battery drainage. Generally this battery drain is temporary. The best thing to do is to monitor your battery situation and, if active, connect your Mac to a power adapter, allowing them to complete without interruption. This shouldn’t last longer than a couple of days at most.

While this is true after a major OS update, these processes are, as you said, temporary. However, the underlying issue with battery drain has continued well after these processes are complete. I have experienced an issue with power napping where my machine seems not to go back to sleep after the first power nap. Additionally, when using it for normal web browsing, the processor seems to be running hotter than expected.

The situation is nothing is perfect.

There are millions of Macs in use worldwide. The number of problems you see here seems to be extensive with "so many" problem posts, but the reality is different.

Given the millions of Macs out there, the number of problems seen here is an infinitesimally small percentage of the whole.

I don't want to argue with you on this optimised battery charging matter. If your "workflow" has to go on working in the night, sure, keep the notebook on. But, if that is not the case, you can always restart the app(s), and they will be where the "work" was left the other day. MacBooks are modern, and it won't give shock/stress to the batteries, nor to the logic board, ram etc. It boots up quite nicely, with nice sound, and all you have to do is to put your finger on the sensor. Anything that's rested would work much better than that's tired. I found my MBP's battery capacity had gone up by ~3.5% after good night's rest!

I'm using Sonoma, by the way.

Not all apps retain their state well when doing this, but beyond that, I find that the OS likes to litter previously open Finder windows somewhat randomly across my desktops. (e.g. I keep a few tabbed Finder windows on each desktop which relate to the type of work I do on each, and on restarting, I have to move them around)
