Updated MacBook Pro to macOS Sonoma, now battery drains quickly

I updated my MacBook Pro this morning to macOS Sonoma. Everything was good at first and I really like the look and feel. But as soon as I took it off my charger to go to some meetings the battery dropped from 74% to 44% in about 5 minutes. Then as soon as I turned on WebEx the battery dropped from 44% to 7%.

Anyone else having battery drain issues with macOS Sonoma? Is it maybe just temporary from all the background activity similar to the phones?

One significant contributor to MacBook battery drain after updating to Sonoma or any other new OS is the background setup processes. These background activities like Spotlight reindexing, Photos synchronization, Time Machine backup operations, emails, messages and other app updates. When your MacBook is working on these tasks, it puts an additional burden on both the CPU and GPU, leading to increased power usage and battery drainage. Generally this battery drain is temporary. The best thing to do is to monitor your battery situation and, if active, connect your Mac to a power adapter, allowing them to complete without interruption. This shouldn’t last longer than a couple of days at most.

I have the same issue!

Device: MacBook Air 13inch 2018 1.6GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

Problem:

Before updating I was able to use my MacBook without charging for 6-8 hours and I have never noticed my MacBook heating and never heard the fan turn on.

After updating the OS to Sonoma 14.3 that battery drains within 1-2 hours of use (In sleep mode it is also loosing charge. It will be completely dead in the morning, and this has never happened before). Also MacBook is getting heated even when it is left in sleep mode for couple of hours.

This is the third day that I'm facing this issue.

This is not okay. Need a fix to this ASAP!

Chrome is my prime suspect. Frequently, after signing on to Google or some other random website, the laptop starts heating up and losing battery at a rate of 1-2% per minute, which later becomes faster. Laptop is fully discharged in 15 min or so. However... Is this really Chrome, or is it another evil trick from Apple to make us use Safari? At any rate, Sonoma is garbage!

Thank you, it worked fine for me (MBP 14" with M1 Pro, battery health 86%). 11 hours on single charge, still 18% remains, and the chassis remains cold. There were 7-8 hours from 100% to 10% on Sonoma before, with sometimes slightly warm chassis, but with "No apps using significant energy".

Looks like now my laptop lives more than lived new on Ventura (10-11 hrs from 100 to 10%).

A very odd thing, but from now I will reinstall OS from time to time.

For info, my typical load: Firefox, Logic Pro, OBS (seldom), Pixelmator, Photoshop (seldom), VLC, Telegram, Final Cut (seldom).

I am in the same position, my battery lasts under 2 hours from full charge since upgrading to Sonoma. Also every icon on the desktop has numbers keep flashing up with is simply annoying! Once the battery gets to under 10% everything goes onto a 'go slow' and often won't even finishing sending an email but no alter is given that it's not gone through. Just all very annoying and simply unnecessary. These devices are not cheap as we all know, and agree why treat us like idiots? That's just rude on too many levels.

Apple sort yourselves out and correct these issues out of respect of people making you your millions.
