Updated MacBook Pro to macOS Sonoma, now battery drains quickly

I updated my MacBook Pro this morning to macOS Sonoma. Everything was good at first and I really like the look and feel. But as soon as I took it off my charger to go to some meetings the battery dropped from 74% to 44% in about 5 minutes. Then as soon as I turned on WebEx the battery dropped from 44% to 7%.

Anyone else having battery drain issues with macOS Sonoma? Is it maybe just temporary from all the background activity similar to the phones?

One significant contributor to MacBook battery drain after updating to Sonoma or any other new OS is the background setup processes. These background activities like Spotlight reindexing, Photos synchronization, Time Machine backup operations, emails, messages and other app updates. When your MacBook is working on these tasks, it puts an additional burden on both the CPU and GPU, leading to increased power usage and battery drainage. Generally this battery drain is temporary. The best thing to do is to monitor your battery situation and, if active, connect your Mac to a power adapter, allowing them to complete without interruption. This shouldn’t last longer than a couple of days at most.

Without wishing to get into a discussion about this major issue. Even with no cables plugged in and in sleep mode battery was going from 100% to 1% with a few hours, plus battery was overheating.

Reinsitalling Sonoma cured issue for 3 days but has now drained battery overnight yet again in sleep mode.

This is a major issue that Apple need to be addressing urgently.

My laptop isn't connected to anything overnight when the battery is draining. It's almost never connected to any peripherals in daily usage (just the occasional external drive).

There isn’t a problem my friend! As I said, if you simply UNPLUG all external cables, your battery will not drain. If you leave cables in overnight, even if what they are connected to is powered down and unplugged, the battery will drain! There’s no problem, no big deal, not complaining, just giving a solution to a problem everyone is having.

The “powerd request=CSPNEvaluation” is new in Sonoma. I guess all Sonoma users will have it? Does somebody know what it is used for? In Ventura I was able to get rid of all wake requests and the machine was sleeping properly! In Sonoma I ended up with the CSPNEvaluation. The machine will not sleep properly as long as this cannot be disabled. Thus it would be crucial to know what it’s purpose is.

Yes! That was what I was thinking. Too bad I didnt take a screenshot before upgrading but my untethered battery time was great 2-3 weeks ago. 1w after Sonoma and it depleats within an hour. I only use a few tabs on chrome and edge, a lot of visual studio code and spotify in the background + BT headphones.

Luckily it's my work computer so the company will take care of any repairs but it's still annoying having to handle this battery stress.

Checked battery life recently and it said NORMAL. Now it says Service Recommended.
2019 MBP Sonoma 14.1.1

Since you are having battery run time issues, then this indicates your battery needs to be replaced. Even if the battery condition toggles back to "Normal", it indicates the battery is in a borderline state and will soon be showing "Service Recommended" all the time.

I've recently updated my Macbook Pro 2019 to Sonoma also.

During the day I normally work with power plugged in and then close lid at night and remove power. Opening lid in morning would still have had loads of battery power left.

Now on Sonoma I waking up to a dead macbook and need to plug in power to turn on. This also caused issues with the resetting of date/time.

I've tried various setting changes as per other threads with no success, tonight I will try the turning wi-fi off as suggested and see what happens.

Are Apple investigating this??

Brand new 16" MacBook Pro M3 Max (running Sonoma 14.1.2 out of the box) - unboxed 3 days ago.

Had below battery drain kick me in the nuts this morning. Went from ~90% to <10% in around 1.5 hours. Nothing significant running at the time.

Assume I had put on max load graphic/computation (again, which I did not have at the time): brand new (and pretty much fully charged) battery should still have longer runway and this (right?)

I've the same issue, but even when its plugged, I used to work on two monitor setup without any battery drain during development all the time while the charger is connected.

Suddenly after I've updated to Sonoma, the battery start to drain bloody fast to 80% and then stay at 80% as long as I've the charger on

Sonoma has a problem regard power consumption and need to be really addressed.

First of all, if you have an electrical socket nearby, plug in the MacBook, before you put it to sleep. Also, have optimised charging mode on. Also,

My MBP is always plugged in, sleeping for ~9-10 hours a day. I rarely use the MBP on battery, but I do sometimes just to check how long the battery will pull. It still does, the battery is quite good. (My MBP is 4 1/2 years old) Time to time, I simply shut it down for the night, when it reaches 100% while in optimised charging. The next day the optimised charging kicks in and within few hours, the battery level falls to 80% and stays there for days.

The macOS takes good care of the charging, especially in optimised charging mode, one doesn't really have to worry.

Updated a couple of days ago to Sonoma, and used my laptop for maybe an hour, left closed in sleep mode. Came back to find it COMPLETELY dead, re-started it, charged it for 15 mins as I needed to move it from one room to another and literally watched it tick from 8% all the way down to 0% in about 3 mins.

My laptop is also now almost too hot to use on my lap - as the name might suggest.
