At this time, there's no mentioned ETA for when macOS Sonoma (version 14) will be compatible with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021. The program doesn't fully support yet which might cause the issue you're encountering in the system.
Furthermore, we recommend running the QBDT for Mac program on a supported operating system. Here's an article for your reference: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021.
Additionally, you can visit and read this article for more details about storing a backup copy of your business: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac company file. It also gives you step-by-step instructions on how to set up automatic backups of your company files.

I've been using QB v. 2020 and after upgrading to Sonoma 14.0, of course, it no longer works. The only options I was given after talking with Intuit were to either downgrade my operating system (and lose some functions) or download QB Desktop on an older computer with an older operating system and work from two computers instead of one. QB is no longer selling desktop versions, so upgrading my 2020 version to 2023 isn't even an option as Intuit now only offers monthly subscription plans. Sort of like leasing a car vs. purchasing it outright. You will make payments forever. This may be a great business plan for QB but it destroys good faith with legacy owners of their software. I think if you believe they will update their older software to be compatible with Sonoma, you are sadly mistaken. That's not going to happen.
I spoke with Intuit yesterday (10/18/23) and was told they are not going to update the desktop standalone version. Further they told me that I must purchase a license for 2024 QB plus pay $650 every year to renew a subscription.
This is not an Apple issue. This is Intuit's business model to which I have two words to say to them but will forgo using in polite company.
I did the same and QB 2021 desktop is working again on my Mac with Sonora OS.
Restart QB and there will be a prompt to update. This update solves the Sonora issue.
You might want to contact Quickbooks support. They may not have updated their app to be compatible with Sonora quite yet.
QB Crash on OS Sonoma
I gave up on QB 2019 using OS Sonoma.
I used Disk Utility to erase my hard drive, install OS Ventura, then migrate my data to either QBO or QB desktop for MAC 64 bit.
Have spent several days researching then doing it.
I am hooking up another external hard drive and will use SUPER DUPER for backups and complete restorations if that happens again.

I spoke with QB support as well and they said they will not be updating 2019 to fix this issue and also said I would have to update to 2024 version at an annual cost of $649 or go to a subscription model which costs $645 annually for my 3 companies. Those prices are excessive. I hope that Apple will fix whatever is causing the issue as QB is a racket!
To add info for QB 2019 users (like me), updating Sonoma to the just released 14.1 fixed the crashing.
Updated my Mac to Sonoma. Now my 2020 standalone version of QB crashes. Spoke with Intuit who informs me that no fix/update is coming and only option is to purchase a new license and the on top of that, I’ll have to pay $650 every year to renew a subscription for my license.
Are you kidding me?

Since I wrote my last question, I decided to shut QB down and start over. (I probably should have done that first.). And, good news, all functions are back to normal. Thank you all for your help and sharing your suggestions. Going forward, I plan on using my desktop version and cancelling my subscription to QB on line. That's money back in my pocket.
Early reports are saying macOS Sonoma 14.1 has fixed the QB issue. It’s either that or the patch from Intuit that Djb1965 mentions, or both.
Thank you everyone for your advice, experience, and encouragement! I just updated to Sonoma 14.1 and now QB's works. Thank you!
With every major upgrade of OS come possible compatibility conflicts.
The solution is rather simple: upgrade to a compatible version of the app, get a different compatible app or wait for an app's developer to catch up with macOS.
It's never a bad idea to contact a developer and express compatibility concerns.
Regardless of who says what about anything, it's the developer's responsibility to make their product work with macOS; never the reverse.
I was able to finally get QB 2021 to open in Sonoma (only pulled my hair out for 5 hours), there is an update that popped up that I installed in QB that it will run. I have not found any issues so far, but for Sonoma....I am not pleased there are a bunch of other issues.
