Issues with iPhone sync from MacBook after iOS17 Update

Hello. I can't find any articles to assist with my particular issue so I've outlined it below:

  • Until 2 weeks ago I was using an iPhone 14 Pro Max (running iOS 16) and a 2020 MacBook Pro (running MacOS 13)
  • 2 weeks ago I updated my iPhone to a beta version of iOS 17 which is when some issues began - when trying to sync music from my MacBook to my iPhone it kept getting stuck on 'preparing to sync' (I'm not using Apple Music streaming - all of my music is purchased) - I was able to work around this by unplugging and replugging in the USB and eventually it would sync.
  • Today my new iPhone 15 Pro Max arrived and I also updated my MacBook software to MacOS 14, hoping this would remove the issue, but it has persisted on the new iPhone and with the new MacOS.
  • Initially, all music synced to my new iPhone butI noticed some of the album art was wrong so I deleted the albums directly from the iPhone with the intention of syncing them back on (around 5 albums).
  • However, they will not sync back to the phone. I've tried removing all music from the iPhone and syncing it again but the problem persists - it will sync all 8000ish songs except the 5 albums I deleted from the iPhone directly. I've done this many times with previous iPhones when album art has been wrong and it's always resynced back on.
  • The sync settings clearly state that I want to sync my entire Apple Music library to the iPhone
  • I've tried rebooting my MacBook in safe mode and I've reset the SMC.
  • I've restarted both devices
  • I've tried deleting the Music app from the iPhone.
  • One odd thing I've noticed is that in Finder view on MacBook with the iPhone selected - it's showing that the last iCloud update of the iPhone was at an incorrect time - I don't know if this is relevant

Super grateful if anyone has any ideas of what's causing this. I can only assume that it's both the MacBook and the new iOS in combination that is causing this issue based on the variables changed.

I would recommend (as it worked in my case): make sure iclouds ID are correctly set.

I had my iCloud ID AND a previous one (which now uses my wife) for stores (music & apps).

I logged out from both in the iPhone and the MBair and re logged in, so I had a clear view that IDs were working properly where they have to be. I was recommended to do so by apple online support chat.

I had to finish the chat and the systems didn't sync yet. I went home and:

I re-started both devices, and the syncing worked gracefully.

It was like there was a mess with IDs (actually it wasn't) as I am evolving systems and backup copies long ago (years I mean)… and the "restart" seems to put everything I had double checked on its place, and understood the computer and iPhone were friends. I can run with MY music ;)

I have also struggled with this and have used the suggestions above. I am just trying to sync music. I have an iPhone 15 Pro on 17.3 and a new iMac with 14.3 running. The problem started in the fall. I also have an up to date Apple watch series 8.

I have found that music will sync properly when connected to the computer if I turn off the Apple watch before I connect the phone. Bluetooth on the phone does not have to be turned off.

This discovery certainly improved the situation, but there is obviously a bug which needs a fix.

Same problem here. iPhone 14 Pro Max Was syncing fine till the 17.3...? update.

Hung up on #4 "Determining songs to sync"

17.4.1 did not help.

Different cords, Rebooting phone/computer, Resetting phone, Turning off Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Airplane mode, disconnecting my Apple Watch - None of these or combination of these worked.

But my wife's iPhone 13 running 17.4.1 Synced Itunes/Music blazingly fast on the same Macbook Pro & cord...

After 2 days of all this and reading a lot of posts. I dug out my old iMac running the Catalina macOS and hooked my 14 up to it, using the same cord and before & with all services active, the system said I had to install a single update but after that my 4K+ music library synced in less than 5 mins.

Once that was complete I was able to connect the 14 to the Macbook Pro Max and sync to that Music library, which is the more current one.

What I learned form this:

  1. Newer is not always the most QC'ed...
  2. I will no longer check "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected". This prevented me from making any changes to the Sync dialog box for testing.
  3. Try Simple solutions first
  4. keep old tech around

A lot of what I read said that a discrepancy between the music on the phone and the libray "could" cause sync issues. For what is worth the last thing I remember changing directly in Music on my phone was to delete the Free U2 album.

Not sure if it was that or the update.

Hey there!! I totally understand your frustration!! When you are toggling off Bluetooth, make sure you are going into the Bluetooth settings and actually toggling off the Bluetooth from where you can see everything that's connected to Bluetooth. NOT the toggle where you swipe down the screen and Bluetooth is next to the WiFi button. It has to be the toggle switch. Hope this works for you. I was doing the button and it wouldn't work but when I did the toggle switch, BOOM, success!!!
