Issue with replying to text on CarPlay with iOS 17

After listening to a text on carplay, Siri asks if I want to reply. I will then speak out a text. Siri then asks send it or change it? I'll either say send it or I'll push the button to send it... but there is no text sent. I've noticed that about 50% of the time, the reply just doesn't exist. Not only did the other person not receive it, but it isn't even on my phone as a text.

This problem only started happening to me with ios 17. What gives?

According to my local dealer, Lexus and Apple are aware of this issue and an iOS update is expected soon.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

But I’ve discovered a workaround. After speaking to text, Siri asks if you want to send it…then we say “YES” and wait. This we get the goofy error message. The work around is, after speaking the message and after Siri asks to send it TAP THE SEND UP ARROW YOURSELF—DON’T WAIT. The message will be sent.

Update: I went to 17.3 the minute it was out. It seems to have resolved the issue (which had advanced to not only adding “what do you want” to texts but then going on to play a country song called “What I Heard.” It was delightful.)

Siri still can’t finish a sentence but at least now she repeats herself before sending a text with a rude opening.

Hello Heycable,

For difficulties related to CarPlay, you'll want to follow the steps below:

• Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS

Check your wired or wireless connection and your iPhone settings
If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:
1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
• If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
• If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.
2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.
3. Restart your iPhone and your car.
4. Make sure that Siri is on.
5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.
7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

Should that behavior still persist, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this further.

Take care.

Not sure if anyone found a fix for this! I have a 2024 Lexus NX. When I got the car Apple CarPlay worked fine but Lexus did a system update and it stopped working. Same issues everyone else mentioned. I was able to get the voice to text to work again by turning down the System Voice in settings on the car. Now it is sending the texts and not saying “Sorry I can’t do that while you are driving”

Nope. Problem there with all the updates. This is the car. Not the app. Certain cars have this issue. My phone works in every other car. Yet no one’s phone works in my car. I even bought a new iPhone , thinking might help. Same issue. Tried that phone in another car, worked perfectly. I have a Lexus. Lexus knows this. They are the ones putting complaints here and saying is apple issue. It is not apple issue. Thanks 🙏

I am having a similar issue but I am a beta tester on iOS 17.5. It has just been happening for around four weeks. It is so bad that I have stopped listening to messages on CarPlay. Siri asks if I want to respond to a text. I say “no” or “no thank you” and he sends my no or no thank you as a text, after saying “send it” and doing it immediately. He adds the persons name to the beginning of the text message sometimes. So people are getting what appear to be very rude responses from me.

I have turned my phone off and restarted. I have not deleted my car and reinstalled it yet, but lots on this forum have tried this without success. So I don’t think that will help. If you’re waiting for a future update to fix it then keep waiting because I’m on 17.5. I have used the Feedback app to report the issue.

The joke is they keep telling us iOS 18 is going to be all about AI, but they can’t even get a simple task like sending or NOT sending a response to a simple text, they really have dropped the ball Apple.

My 204 Lexus ES300H has the problem (which I addressed here earlier in a previous post) and it was discussed with my dealer. They said that Lexus as aware of the problem, specifically with '24s, and Apple would soon be releasing an update fix for it. That was 2 minor updates ago. I have iPhone 14Pro w/17.3.1. Typically the problem is, and often it isn't consistent, 10% of the time it functions as it should, that upon initiating CarPlay speak to text Siri begins but cuts out when inquiring of what you want to say. Then, Siri either just says some goofy stuff or "I'm unable to find that location." In any case, I feel it's a Lexus issue. My phone works as it should in every other case, including using a bluetooth dongle for wireless CarPlay in the same car. What's frustrating is that it doesn't appear to be easy to communicate with Lexus other than through the dealer. So far they just say that Apple is going to provide and update. BS!

Definitely not a Toyota/Lexus thing, as quite a few Hyundai owners have reported this as well. This makes it seem like it is 100% an Apple issue.

I have the same problems with music still playing (or even worse - un muting my media when I hit the mute button first), reply messages being cut-off, etc. I can send messages better now with 17.4 - but it is definitely not fixed.

How can we all go about getting this info to Apple so they realize this is a more prevalent issue affecting multiple brands of car owners?

Mar 25, 2024 7:03 AM in response to Heycable

As more people continue to post here and on other forums, I think making Apple officially aware of the issue is important. Letting them know it is affecting multiple brands and models of cars will help them see it is not unique to one make or model. Here is the link: Product Feedback - Apple

Provide some specifics on what is happening and what year, make, and model it is occuring on. With many months since ios 17's release, we need to get some resolution to make this work as it should.
