Open box Macbook Pro

Is an open box labeled by Apple Inc. as "Open box" with a serial number? Someone wants to sell it, an I am not familiar with open box Macbooks. How do I know that I'm not getting something faulty or has issues?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.7

Apple does not sell "Open Box" items. They sell refurbished items, and Apple is the only source for them. Third-party resellers are not permitted to sell Apple refurbished products guaranteed by Apple.

There is no way to tell in advance if a purported "Open Box" MBP is any good or not. Is the seller trustworthy? Can you return the item for a full refund if it is faulty? Does the seller provide a warranty?

Even if the seller is a well-known retailer, you have to wonder why they would have "Open Box" MBPs. Were they floor demos? Returns from previous buyers? Employee use? They would all be used items, not "Open Box."

When a new Mac is not able to be sold as new, (dues to complexities of the uniform commerce regulations) it is sent back through the manufacturing process, refreshed back to showroom condition and re-tested, and re-appears as "Apple refurbished".

Apple does not sell any "Open Box" goods, at all, ever.

You are dealing DIRECTLY with a seller, who at least is honest enough to report its condition, and not try to sell it to you as new. However, if they did not do EXACTLY the steps required to return it to "like new" condition, or it is actually stolen property, you will NOT be able to use it for anything except a doorstop. if you are dealing with an individual with the ability to disappear and NOT be held accountable, your money is also likely to disappear without a trace.
