How to fix Stuttering and Jerking issues in system scrolling

Hello from Ukraine!

About two years ago I bought your Mac mini on an M1 chip with 16 gigabytes of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. This nettop came pre-installed with macOS 11.4, and on the first day I noticed stuttering and jerking while scrolling in different places in the system. Before that, I used the gaming barebone nettop Intel NUC Hades Canyon (the older model with the HVK index) based on Windows 10 and there were no such problems with scrolling, everything worked very smoothly. I have now updated to macOS 14.0 Sonoma (23A344), but the problem still persists! This is especially noticeable when scrolling through the list of widgets and in the system settings, in the sections for choosing wallpapers and screensavers. In Safari, everything also scrolls with noticeable jerks, especially on YouTube. At the same time, Firefox scrolls content as smoothly as possible, which is why I only use it. The funny thing is that Firefox is a cross-platform web browser, and Safari is created by Apple employees exclusively for macOS, so it should be the fastest and smoothest, but it is not.

I connect the Mac mini with an HDMI cable to an LG 27UP650-W monitor with a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) and a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz. I've read that the M1 chip Mac mini supports the Apple Pro Display XDR at 6K (6016 x 3384) resolution, so my monitor should be easily supported and not have a major impact on GPU performance. I use a Logitech G903 Lightspeed mouse and also purchased Mac Mouse Fix (MMF) version 3.0.0 Beta 6 (21668). Before MMF, I used the free Chinese MOS utility, but with it the scrolling slows down even more. I installed only a few different browsers (Chrome and Firefox) and a few utilities on the system. I don’t use any garbage cleaners or optimizers. It has already reached the point that I even specifically bought your Apple Magic Mouse in the hope that everything would scroll smoothly with it. But no miracle happened - with the Magic Mouse, scrolling occurs with noticeable jerks, just like when using a regular mouse. There’s no talk of any of the buttery smooth scrolling that people so often like to talk about at WWDC presentations! I'm still in shock, especially considering the Mac mini is relatively modern, cost about $1,000, and has an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU. WTF?! O___O

I read reviews on the Internet and see that everyone else has the same problem, especially those who bought computers based on the M1 and M2 chip. Moreover, even reinstalling the system completely does not help people.

Please tell me, are you at least trying to somehow fix this problem??? And if so, when can we expect this disgusting bug to be fixed? When can I expect the buttery smooth scrolling to appear in macOS that I have dreamed of for so long and that I so hoped to see when buying your expensive nettop?

I'm looking forward to your answer!

I have already filed a bug report using the built-in feedback assistant utility in macOS ,-)

Display Support:2 Displays*Resolution Support:6016x3384 (6K)*

Details:*This model supports "up to" two simultaneous displays -- one "up to" 6K resolution (6016x3384) at 60 Hz via Thunderbolt 3 and one display "up to" 4K (4096x2160) at 60 Hz via HDMI 2.0.

The Thunderbolt 3 ports support native DisplayPort output using USB-C as well as Thunderbolt 2, DVI, and VGA output with adapters. In addition to HDMI, the HDMI 2.0 port supports DVI using an HDMI to DVI adapter. All adapters are sold separately.

2nd Display Support:Dual/Mirroring*2nd Max. Resolution:4096x2160*

Details:*Please refer to the earlier field for details, but if the primary display is 6016x3384 (6K) via Thunderbolt 3, the largest secondary display this system can support is 4096x2160 (4K) via HDMI 2.0.

This model has two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports and one HDMI 2.0 port. The Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 ports support DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbps), and USB 3.1 Generation 2 (up to 10 Gbps).

TB/USB-C to MDP would be better/faster.

Might depend on the rating or even length of your HDMI cable...

I've been dealing with this also for two weeks now, no fix in sight. I tried other monitors and same blinking/jumping or it's kinda like the screen is just moving upward and back down like the picture when it's scrolling when you first turn the computer on. It doesn't do it on the screen saver - just when you open up and start working. It's doing it about every 6 seconds. It does it on the screen attached, Samsung 49" widescreen, it does it on a 27" screen asus, mci, other screens I'm sure. So it must be a software or mac mini issue. I'm not quite sure. But this didn't start until after upgrading to the Sonoma 14 (23A344) I cannot go in and choose any other display that will work, I cannot chose a background without the live screen movement either, which I think is where this originated. HELP, I can't get things done, this jumping is driving me crazy.

Judging by the review by user JuicyGoomba from the MacRumors forum, the problem is in the system itself and its smooth scrolling algorithms:

"Sadly this has been an issue ever since "retina" displays became a thing on Mac OS.

Apple have never bothered to actually optimise Mac OS in the last 10 years. Why? Because those people who exclusively use Mac OS will likely never touch a Windows or Android device. Even Chrome OS is significantly smoother.

Because they have nothing to compare to, it is "buttery smooth" to them.

Same thing holds true for iOS. You'll notice on many 60fps YouTube reviews for the 15 Pro that they still stutter like crazy on a basic settings menu and even the home screen.

A lot of people simply don't notice or care. Apple certainly don't.

Your choice is to live with it, or move to Windows/Linux/ChromeOS/Android etc.

Apple always gloat about how powerful their chips are, but look at the embarrassment that is Apple Music/iTunes on the desktop. They don't optimise any of their software. Even Chrome on MacOS is significantly smoother to scroll compared to Safari.

Infact, go on any Windows PC and you'll notice the browser version of Apple Music also lags like crazy, just like the native app.

Like I said most people, especially those wearing the Apple-tinted specs, don't see or care about the stutters. The OS is generally fast enough and is above all else a tool, which is slightly ironic given how much emphasis Apple put on creating a beautiful UI.

Use all operating systems regularly, and Android is by far the smoothest and fastest out of them all. Windows 11 is 2nd probably followed by Pop OS a close 3rd. Despite what many sheeple and Apple themselves would have you believe, both Mac OS and iOS are at the bottom of the pile as far as fluidity is concerned. A crying shame considering how amazing some of the animations and transitions are."

Hello Vlad_Koon,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

You've done some great troubleshooting on your own already. To continue, can you check that your Mac has enough available storage space? If needed, follow these tips to create more available storage: Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support

If the issue continues, please restart your Mac in safe mode before testing the scrolling features again: Start up your Mac in safe mode. You can also find additional suggestions here: If your Mac runs slowly - Apple Support.

It is also a good idea to back up and update your Mac if you can: Update macOS on Mac

Reply back here for more help if you are still noticing an issue.

Cheers!

Glad to see this issue and know I am not crazy. Just returned an M3 Pro with 36gb thinking it was a device issue. Apple Support (the Logic Experts) also thought it was a device issue not software. They were wrong.

Strangely, my trusty 16" M1 Pro is the least bad of them all with this issue. Not perfect, but the most livable. 14" M2 Pro (binned 10 core) also suffers from it.

So I know I'm not offering a solution because it is clearly an optimization problem not a CPU/GPU issue. All we can do is call Apple Support and complain until somebody--anybody--does something about it.

Same here with M3 Max. The chip doesn't seem to matter. It's fundamentally crappy software code from Apple. Win11 has 100% perfect smooth scrolling, all webpages display at full refresh rate of whatever you have (120hz, 165hz, whatever) all UI animations are perfectly synced at full frame rate. MacOS just lags and stutters, it's unbelievable for a company with 3 Trillion market cap.

Apple used to be the KING with little details like these, unfortunately just a shadow of their former selves now.

I booted into Safe Mode, but didn't notice any improvement.

I don't see any point in trying to investigate this problem any further because it's obvious that other Mac users are also experiencing it. Just Google: “Stuttering and jerking when scrolling in macOS.” Here is one of the first links in search results: https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/v8o34l/stutter_when_scrolling/

I really don’t understand why you’re sending me all these links, wasting your time and mine 🤨 It feels like you have buttery smooth scrolling on your Mac. LOL!!! 🤣 I’m more than sure that your scrolling also slows down and stutters, like everyone else’s. All we have to do is wait for Apple to finally optimize its system, which is just LOL, considering that even on Windows there are no such problems with scrolling 🤦‍♂️
