My AirPods Max worked great from new for first four months but now have developed two problems - 1) they do not charge past 25% and 2) they do not connect to my iPhone. I have tried (several times) ALL the online advice (checking charging cable, resetting, disconnecting from iPhone and reconnecting, cleaning out charging socket etc. etc). They show on my iPhone settings screen but will not connect. Any advice please?

You've done some great troubleshooting so far. To continue, go here for more suggestions if your AirPods will not connect with your iPhone: If your AirPods won't connect.
Please also be sure to fully charge your AirPods. It may help to test multiple charging cables and adapters if there is an issue with the charger you are using now.
It may also help to reset them again following these instructions: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro.
If you have a second device, try pairing your AirPods with that device instead of your iPhone. If the issue continues, please contact Apple Support directly for more help as service may be required for your AirPods.
