In prior releases of Watch OS, you could see what apps were open by pushing side button and closing unused ones. Now in Watch OS 10 that function seems to no longer available and my watch runs out of battery charge daily. This is unsatisfactory. What has happened? How can this be done?

Quick Double tap on your crown button then swipe left to close.
The default double-click press has to be fairly quick, yes.
On the paired iPhone: Watch app > Settings > Accessibility > Button Click Speed > [choose your preference]
Yes thank you. I double tap and it is a hit and miss result. It is a series 9 purchased through Apple
software is up to date.
maybe I don’t double tap quick enough?

it appears that after the double click on the crown (when it works, I need usually 2-4 attempts), after a short delay the first app shown is activated. If I manage to prevent that the swipe is not detected properly resulting in the activation of the app under the finger. Very frustrating and inconvenient for a device to be used on the go.

From earlier replies in the thread, double-click on the crown and then (quickly) spin to select, then slide to the left.
Or let watchOS manage the apps, of course.

the watch I have is called series 9 on Apple site
I just bought it there and figured that is what it’s called.
On watchOS 9, press the side button (the flat one) to use this functionality. Double pressing the crown is for watchOS 10 and above.

Since watchOS 10, it has changed to double clicking the Digital Crown.

Thank you this finally worked! When I double clicked then dialed the crown it gave me the option to close the apps. Swiping doesn’t work! So annoying
