[Safari 17.0 & Sonoma 14.0] Picture in Picture not working anymore

Hi all!

After updating to Sonoma 14.0 and Safari 17.0 (19616.1.27.211.1) the Picture in Picture Mode is not working any more. At least not on YouTube and Twitch. Right-clicking the loudspeaker-icon will only mute the current tab in Safari.

Is anyone else having these issues? Any solution available?

I might have found out, where the problem is located:

When using the Magic Mouse (via Control-Click) the loudspeaker-icon will only mute the current tab in Safari. When using the Magic Trackpad, everything works just fine. That is also the reason I have no problems on my MacBook Pro (where I only use the trackpad).

The Magic Mouse is causing the issues.

Hello uLu_MuLu,

We have a great support article that might help with this. Please take a look at it here: Play web videos in Safari on Mac - Apple Support. Make sure these are the steps you are following to use the Picture in Picture feature.

If you are following that guidance, we advise that you restart your Mac (Shut down or restart your Mac) and make sure it's fully updated (Update macOS on Mac). Once those are done, please test this issue.

If the issues persist, continue by testing to see when this behavior occurs. First, put your Mac into safe mode and test. Booting into safe mode will disable any startup and login items from automatically opening, which can help us to isolate the source of the issue further. When you do this, you’ll see some unusual behavior from the display; this is to be expected. Please follow the steps in this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Next, let's see if this behavior persists in a new user account on your Mac. Testing in a new user will determine if you have a system-wide issue or if it's user-specific. Please follow these steps to make a test account that can be deleted later: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac. Once the new user account has been set up, log out of your own account then into the new one to test the issue.

Let us know how this goes, please. Thanks and take care.

Hi Gena_D,

Thank you for your prompt reply!

The PiP-Mode is working fine on my MacBook Pro (Intel-Chip) which is still on MacOS Ventura.

I am certain that this problem has something to do with MacOS Sonoma or the newest version of Safari...

I know how to start the PiP-Mode. The system is fully updated. I have no secondary user-account on my main machine. I unfortunately won't test this option because I would rather not add an account just for testing - even if you can delete it afterwards.

Furthermore, I bet that the issue will be resolved in future updates. Would have been interesting to know if any other users have the same problem... :)

Thank you!

Best regards
