iPhone 15 keeps coming on and off charge

I just got my 15 and i’ve been charging it with the cable from the box and an apple usb c plug, every time it goes up by 1-2% it comes off charge then goes back on again. I’ve tried it with another usb c apple cable and has the same issue, charged it with an anker cable in my car with the same issue and I’m at a loss now of what to do!

I’ve always had the old cable issue of wiggling it to the right angle to charge but this isn’t the same thing, it can be laid flat and still go on and off charge like no tomorrow! It’s on IOS 17.0.2.

It still does charge and hold charge it’s just annoying and a bit concerning that it keeps going on and off like it is

EDIT: not sure why it says i posted this on my 12, i have posted it on the 15 🤦🏻‍♀️

Do you have charging optimization on in settings? If it’s set to 80% limit and your phone is close to 80% when you plug it up that may be the issue. Same may be true if you selected the Optimized Battery Charging option. Switch it to None and see if the same thing occurs. If it does then definitely take the phone to your nearest Apple Store to be evaluated (or call Apple for assistance if you don’t have a store in your area). You are still in the exchange period so you could also just opt to exchange it.

And it’s not saying you posted from your 12. That’s just the device you have on your profile.

someone in the thread did mention using a cable that has a normal usb on the other end to charge it, i did this too and it worked at home and in the car, might be a good temporary fix for you- doesn’t fast charge though! i did find my plug was warped as i said above and now i got an anker plug instead which works and im not experiencing this issue anymore so could be another option :) annoying to shell out more money though when you’ve JUST bought it :/

9/10 it’s a software glitch. Sometimes when “Charging optimization”, under Settings > Battery > Charging optimization, is turned OFF it charges normally, but sometimes it doesn’t, thus going on/off/on charge. I believe we gotta wait a patch or iOS 18. I personally have it capped at 80% limit, but going on and off charge can damage the battery in the long run. Hope it helps.

I have been having issues with my powerbank and iPhone, when connecting, it goes on and off continuously like yours, idk why but my other powerbank and charger works just fine. Here is the rated output for all three of them: Powerbank - 1 (Has the on/off problem)

Outputs: 5V/3A=15W, 9V/2.22A=19.98W,12V/1.67A=20.04

Powerbank - 2 (Doesn't have the on/off problem)

Outputs: 5V/3A=15W, 9V/2A=18W, 12V/1.5A=18W

Charger (Doesn't have the on/off problem)

Outputs: 5V/3A=15W, 9V/2.22A=19.98W, 12V/1.67A=20.04W

Note: I have an iPhone 15 and all the chargers and powerbanks I use are rated for PD charging. I have tried Samsung's original charger but a 25W one and I faced the issue. I used any legit available to me with higher rated capacity than 20W and they all had this issue. So my guess is that the charger/powerbanks are trying to deliver a higher wattage to the iPhone and the iPhone is trying to protect it from over-heating or too much wattage being drawn in. Hence, it turns of the charging.

Conclusion/Possible solution: Use any legit charger with max. rated output approximately equals to 20W PD Charging, but not more than that. That worked for me because if you don't give the iPhone enough juice to struggle, it won't have that issue.

I'm experiencing the same exact issue on my iPhone 15 Pro. I use:

  1. Original 20W Apple Charger.
  2. Original out of the box USB-C cable

The phone is brand new , 3 weeks old. It worked fine the first 3 weeks , no issues at all but the previous night the issues started. I didn't do any updates or anything out of ordinary with the phone. It happened with iOS 17.4 and i updated to 17.5.1 (latest) and the issue persist.

  • The "affected" charger works with other iPhones and Apple Watch so the charger cannot be faulty.
  • Using "affected" charger with wireless charging dock works with iPhone 15 Pro.
  • Using different original 20W charger and same cable works with iPhone 15 Pro.
  • Using Macbook original 30W charger and same cable works with iPhone 15 Pro.

The only solution is to buy a new charger but I don't want to do it. I already bought the charger. Also who guarantees that the same issue won't happen again with new charger?

Apple can you please look into the issue? There are many reports on this so it seems something must be going on. Thanks!

The problem is the battery optimized feature. Sometimes it allows too much current upwards of 3.4amps to get into the phone, that’s about 30w at 9v. So the built in protection trips off the charging when the wattage drawn becomes to high. I witness this with chargers that are able to give as much power as possible. If you have a charger less than 25w and not more you’ll be fine. The charging software can draw upwards of 30 watt, and with the nature of flexible current draw most of these power bricks have no control on max current draw. So when you plug in your phone. Its starts with a low current draw and for fast charging increases till it reaches 30 watts. That triggers the iPhone battery protection software to power cycle again. I thinks it’s a flaw in the software because it should have a fixed current draw for fast charging but it doesn’t. Even with the optimized battery feature. And if you turn it off you don’t get fast charging.

what I’ve learnt recently is to toggle off the optimized feature to none for a while and then back and you won’t have it again.

Mine has been doing this and it’s driving me mad! It happens on every iPhone I get (I get the latest every year) around the same time. Be sure to check your charging port is not clogged up with pocket dust as this will stop the charger sitting in flush within the port (you will be surprised how much gets clogged up in there)

im not a fan of USB-C and never was! It’s even more susceptible to clogging up with pocket dust due to the usb C ‘nib’ that sticks out within the port

I think alot of it is due to weak cables and poor charging ports (pretty evident as you have to wiggle and position the cable at a specific angle to get it charging again)
