Can’t print with iPadOS17

I have been printing reliably to an AirPrint HP printer from both my iPhone and iPad Pro until today when I updated the iPad to 17.0.2. I can no longer print from my iPad. I am still connected to the same network as the printer and the printer shows up in the print dialogue box with the correct name and settings. When I execute Print everything seems to runs normally and the Print Center shows the document progressing normally and then clears. Nothing is printed by the printer and the printer queue shows nothing is waiting. I can still print the same document(s) from my iPhone running IOS 16.x.

Dave,

I had the same issue with an Kyocera laser printer, old but very quick duplex office printer, worked perfectly under iOS 16, would be recognised in the printer dialogue by iOS 17, but then quickly disappeared and would not print. Would not take a firmware update.

As I understand it, the older printers had an earlier version of AirPrint (Bonjour) 1.2.1 (2003 - 2015) which it seems is no longer supported by Apple Inc. The current version (?) is 3.1.0.1 dated April 2018 as far as I can tell. Printers which support AirPrint 3.1.0.1 should work. Unless a firmware upgrade to 3.1.0.1 works for your printer, iOS 17 won’t AirPrint to your device. Check with your printer help desk what version of AirPrint they support.

I got around this by configuring an AirPrint (Bonjour) print server running cups Bonjour print services, this is open source, (cost me $50) which connects via USB to the printer, only pulls 5 volts and solved my printing problem without having to buy a new expensive laser. Hope this helps.

Hi Jan

raspberry pi mini, running cups, easy to setup, about an hour see script below, I run it on a Pi 3, will probably run on a Pi 2, connect printer to one of the USB ports, when done just disconnect mouse keyboard and screen and put it behind yr printer. Runs on a 5 volt supply. Will keep config if you have to reboot the device. You will see it as a AirPrint print option from IOS 17 and Sonoma.

You can control printers and print jobs from remote browser window in your phone or iPad or laptop.

hope this might help

Ah, such “fun”. The HP published specs for that printer don’t indicate AirPrint support, which means vendor drivers and apps are necessary. Conversely, the printer manual for that printer does indicate AirPrint support. And the manual indicates that a firmware update might be required for AirPrint, and to visit a particular HP link, and the HP link is unavailable. Turns out the embedded link in the manual is different from the displayed link, and the embedded link apparently also wrong and the displayed link (when manually transcribed) works. From the manual, it also appears the firmware update tool for that printer runs on Windows and macOS, and is known as HP Utility. And from the links on the support website, HP is referencing a completely different utility HP_Easy_Admin.app.

Why, HP, why?

Here’s the macOS Admin tool download:

If you have a Mac, see if that tool can load new firmware. (From what is published, I can’t tell if there even is new firmware. But there are references to firmware updates and firmware versions.)

There is an HP Smart app in the iPhone and iPad app store as well, though the reviews there are decidedly mixed. That app might update the firmware, and that might be able to print.

You’re probably headed for a discussion with HP support here, as this all seems rather tangled.

Local printer preference is a Brother printer, with AirPrint support.

It is strange because the printer has always supported AirPrint and worked perfectly with iOS 16 and below. Something in 17 changed. You can see all the Bonjour information in the current firmware.

Short answer: You’ll want to discuss any potential AirPrint support with HP. Ask about the firmware. They’ll likely suggest loading the latest driver kit.

Long answer:

AirPrint uses Bonjour as a dependency, but Bonjour is available entirely independently of AirPrint.

Many (most? all?) network-connected printers now support Bonjour, but those same printers may or may not support AirPrint.

AirPrint is effectively a superset of IPP/IPPS. Interestingly, that Bonjour network display shows IPP, which the online HP tech specs for that printer don’t reference. The printer’s user guide does mention AirPrint, but mentions a firmware upgrade may be required. I’m not sure which doc here I believe.

The Apple listing of AirPrint printers also doesn’t include the LaserJet 400 Color M451dn.

The user guide lists HP Utility for Mac as the firmware update tool. I’d guess some of the other HP tools more recently offered also include firmware display and update features.

This reply is specific to the HP LaserJet 400 Color M451dn.

I have the same problem with that model HP printer. This only happens to me when printing any photo under iOS 17 to this printer. All other documents print. Last firmware for it was from 2019. I can also tell you that even in the most recent testing release of iOS 17 the airprint issues have not been resolved.

Update the firmware to the 2022A version from 2020, and check again.

The last firmware version available for the Color LaserJet 400 M451DN is version 20190306 from March 2019. Are you referring to a different printer model?

I was referring to HP Envy 7645 which is the most recently-referenced printer in this thread.

There are driver updates for the Color LaserJet 400 M451dn from a couple of weeks ago; from 31-Oct-2023. I don’t see firmware listed, but having that buried in some driver kit wouldn’t surprise.

It’s unfortunately not an AirPrint printer, nor seemingly IPP/IPPS (for macOS or other platforms), which means it’s a pretty limited choice when vendor drivers are unavailable, “unworking”, or undesirable.

The lack of AirPrint also means that printing requires a vendor app for iPhone and iPad.

Apple have modified certain parameters of image-as-a-pdf sent to the printer. Interpretors on most of the Printers are not able to undertsand what the IOS17 client is sending.

While most of the printers expect the pdf to be a standalone document, the new implementation of the IOS17.2 expects the print to be a combination of pdf and metadata sent. Which most printers are unaware of.

Its a simple fix for the printers, if one starts combining metadata with pdf, every printer will start doing it out of the competition.
