I was able to connect my iPad 6th gen to my Mac that's running Sonoma. after you've got your iPad connected, open up Finder and your device should show up in that left panel. There's an option to update and recover devices.

There is no iTunes version that will run on Sonoma.
From Catalina onwards, you connect to an iPhone or iPad in the Finder. When you connect to it with the cable, it will show up in the side bar.

iTunes does not run under Monterey, see this What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support iTunes was replaced starting with Catalina, way back in 10.15. Nothing since then runs iTunes. So iTunes is not longer available in Big Sur, not in Monterey, and not in Ventura, and not in Somona.
For music, iTunes has been replaced with Apple Music. It handles music files the same way that iTunes did. So for use with music, Apple Music looks like iTunes but has a different name.
For backing up and sync of iPhones, that is done from the Finder since iTunes went away. When the iPhone is connected it shows up in the left hand list of devices. You click once on it and a window opens up that looks just like the old iTunes window looked like for managing iPhone content. You can update, backup, sync, etc. from that Finder window.
What Barney said.
It seems that you don't realize that all of the iTunes functions have been subsumed by other apps: if you upgrade past Mojave, your music library will be intact and used by the Music application. Your podcasts will be in Podcasts, video in TV, and the managing of iOS devices is done, very properly by Finder.
There is no loss of functionality, and things are much more sensible now.
And then what next ?
I can't imagine what you possibly think could come next besides selecting it in the sidebar.
Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your Mac - Apple Support
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support
Do what?
Open a Finder window and on the Sidebar, un “Locations” you will see any connected device like an iPad or iPhone. Select it and you can manage it.
iTunes hasn't been available since Mojave.

What is so special about iTunes?

iTunes does not work in Monterey.
I don’t know which app handles audiobooks, but Music and TV can store your Library in an External. I don’t know if Books manages Audiobooks nor if it can store the library somewhere else.
That is absolutely false. It may not call itself iTunes anymore, but it works perfectly Under Monterey. How do I know? Because I am running it right now on my MacBook Pro. I just dropped my iTunes folder which I created in Mojave, into the Apple Music folder and when I opened Apple Music there it was. My entire iTunes library, including Playlists. Don't believe everything you hear. I'll tell you again. It's working perfectly under Monterey. From what I have read, the only operating system that it definitely won't work on is Sonoma.

No, what steve626 is not false. There is a new application called Music. The OP was wanting to copy the actual iTunes from an older OS and run it in Monterey. There is no dispute that one can use the iTunes library in Monterey.
And, by the way, the Music application works just fine, and continues to work with the iTunes library, in Sonoma as well.

You're welcome. Personally I've never had to recover an iPad so I don't have any other suggestions. Hopefully someone will.
