I was able to connect my iPad 6th gen to my Mac that's running Sonoma. after you've got your iPad connected, open up Finder and your device should show up in that left panel. There's an option to update and recover devices.

The Music application will pick up your existing iTunes library, without you having to do anything.

Case in Point: use iTunes, ...., upgrade your OS to a version of at least Mojave (or was it Catalina? not sure anymore... whatever the one where Music, TV, etc were introduced); open the Music application and all your music library works just as it did in iTunes. So simple.

I'll add - 15 years of DJing library, 40,000 ++ songs available on laptop and two backup macs (running Mojave of course). I'd like more speed with an M2 upgrade, but alas. After updating ios on macs above Mojave, it was messy - more clicks, less simple functionality, workflow interruptions so I went back to Mojave. The backup/restore, etc. between 3 macs with Mojave and iTunes is simple - not so with trying to do backup/restore with the M2 - other than timeline, but that's not going to happen quickly. Gigs depend on dependability of my laptop and being able to keep them in sync which I can do typically under an hour. And yeah - I carry backups to gigs (especially internationally) both extra laptop and ipad. Reliability - simplicity was the watchword until ..... Apple Music complicated it and kept trying to hook me into Apple Music online ... as is said all progress is not necessarily an improvement ;-) 2cents..

yes - sad to see I-tunes go. With I-tunes you had full control. Now with music Apple has control and its unfortunate, because the quality isn't there. The number of errors Apple music comes with for album covers and icon pictures for Artists (even though you haven't asked for it) is annoyingly high - an example is for the band I have called Samson - (albums history and music through 80's, 90's and 00's - maybe the young haven't heard of, but Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden was also the lead vocalist for Samson for a number of years before joining Iron Maiden. Who is in the picture, - the band Samson but a guy I don't recognize or heard of also called Samson? No idea but its incorrect!!

I-tunes may be current, but quality -definitely not!!

Apple needs to bring back an I-POD modus so we have control and not use such an inordinate time correcting Apple's laziness.
