In order to check if it is a temporary glitch, try a "forced" restart of your device using these instructions: Put it on charge for at least half an hour, then, keeping it plugged in, use these gestures:

Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 10-20 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear, the one with the "slider" to turn the device off included).

If the issue still persists, it might be a hardware (battery? screen? other internal component?) failure, and I suggest that you make an appointment (*) and have your device inspected at an Apple Store or AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) among this list:--> https://locate.apple.com/choose-country-region . After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options.

I’m waiting and hoping that iOS 17.1 will fix this issue for me. Never had a problem with my screen going black upon plugging it into power, until the current iOS 17.0.3

I tend to wait for the first full iOS update, before upgrading my iOS version, but since there was a security issue so soon after iOS 17’s release, I did the upgrade.

I am hoping the black-but-still -works screen, is just a bug that needs to be worked out, and then it probably will be golden.

This happened on my 12 Mini after the update. Sometimes the screen would return after leaving the phone alone a couple hours, then suddenly go black again while using it. Force restart as described did not work. Attempting to reset the phone but no only have I lost EVERYTHING, but the screen is not coming back. This is NOT hardware as the screen intermittently works perfectly. Will not buy another iPhone!!!!!
