I have created a link to a URL by selecting the text I want to act as the link, then Ctrl, L, and pasting in the URL. The link works, but only with a right click.
Is there a way to make the link work directly with one click on the words I have selected?

Do you have confirmation that it takes a Control (right) - click by your receiptients (both Mac and PC) to open the links?
If you create the email message in Rich text (Mail ➙ Composing settings pane)
it should open with a single click. However, it will depend on how the recipients' mail app/computer is setup for them to activate URL links.
Use the Link button at the bottom of the entry field:

I created the links in Mail and they will be opened on both Macs and PCs.
