Hi Desparate9,

If the photos no longer show on the old phone, they are no longer there. If they are there or somewhere else, you may be able to recover some by using If you're missing photos or videos in the Photos app - Apple Support.

If you believe your photos may have been contained in a previous backup, you can use the steps here to locate the backup for your previous device: Locate backups of your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

We'd suggest completing the next step on your old device, once you've determined that you have a recent backup that contains the information. Once complete, follow the steps to restore the backup: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support The benefit to completing this on your old iPhone, means that your new iPhone will not be affected and your data is safe. This will allow you to see if the photos you are looking for are included. Then, you may want to enable iCloud Photos as mentioned in the first article we provided to reduce data loss.

If you decide to restore from the previous backup on your new iPhone, any current data on the iPhone may be lost. For example, if your last backup was over one month ago, any data received since then would not appear unless synced with iCloud.

Cheers.
