I update to IOS 17, and lost all my contacts stored on my iPhone. Now my only contacts on my phone are those stored in iCloud. How do I get my contacts stored back on my iPhone? I have updated to the most recent IOS 17.0.2.

I am having this exact same problem. iPhone SE updated from iOS 16.x to iOS 17.1.1. Using a laptop and logging into iCloud, all contacts still exist. But phone no longer has them. All texts no longer show names but only phone #s. I have no idea who’s calling because contacts are gone. Was online w/ Apple help for hours last night. No resolution. I’m considering trying to wipe the phone clean, next. Has ANYONE figured out how to resolve this? It is infuriating! I travel, and I need my phone AND the contacts to be able to be displayed.
I have been having the missing contacts issue as well, it was only certain contacts. I talked with Apple Support and for me it was because I had toggled off my Contacts in my email/mail account (Settings, Mail, Accounts, then choose the email account, toggle on Contacts). Once I toggled that back on, my missing contacts came back, as well as the All Contacts list.
I found this in the thread and it worked.
“I fixed this by going into settings>icloud>(apps using iCloud) contacts > toggle to keep contacts on phone. Then turn the phone off and on again.
That brought my contacts back to everything. Then I just toggled iCloud back on for contacts and merged them again.”
Also the apps for my iwatch are more difficult to use!!! Why??? Who thought this was better? Arghhh
Go to Settings > tap your name > iCloud to have a check. If the Contacts Sync is on, you can toggle off/on to refresh the sync between your iPhone and iCloud.
Were your text messages saved?
If your husband moves from IOS 17.1.2 to to IOS 17.2 (which I believe was released yesterday 12 December 2023) you may find this fixes the problem as it has done with my own iPhone)
I am facing same problem, the most annoying is that even the ones I have managed to resave are still deleting. iPhone should do something quick to save us from this mess.
I shut it down twice and restarted the phone. They are all back now.

SO FRUSTRATED. My contacts, including my OWN info, is outdate (by 10 years!). I may switch to android. contact synching should not be so difficult.
Blunder - I'll say. I use this to store all sorts of info. Keeps disappearing. HUGE PROBLEM. NOT FUNNY. HEY APPLE --------------- WHAT THE FECK .........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????
