Is cleaning the display of my iMac or MacBook a good idea while the display is still on? Even if I apply little pressure?
I ask this because I assume the glass screen is fairly distant from the pixels behind it, and thus would not damage the display.

Personally, I would believe Apple's directions and follow them. See the instructions in How to clean your Apple products - Apple Support including the following:
