Dell S3422DWG resolution not detected by MacBook Pro 2014

I connect my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9) to Dell S3422DWG monitor. But, it doesn't recognize the monitor resolution (3440 x 1440). It can only get up to 1080p.

I have tried different HDMI cables (High Speed HDMI Cables with Ethernet), but it doesn't help.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

There are other posts that solve this issue by using USB-C connection instead of HDMI. But, my MacBook doesn't have USB-C.

Thank you!

your display appears to be 3440 by 1440, which requires "4K" support.

Ports

  • 2 x HDMI (ver 2.0)
  • 1 x DisplayPort (ver 1.2)

your computer:

2nd Display Support: Dual/Mirroring* 2nd Max. Resolution: 2560x1600 (x2*)

Details:* This model supports a simultaneous maximum resolution up to 2560x1600 on two external displays via Thunderbolt.

Alternately, it can support a single display up to 2560x1600 via Thunderbolt AND a single 1080p display at up to 60 Hz, 3840x2160 at 30 Hz, or 4096x2160 at 24 Hz via HDMI.

in summary, your computer does not produce the required signal over its HDMI port.

>>You should use a ThunderBolt-2/Mini-DisplayPort to [full size] DisplayPort cable and live happily ever after.
