Icloud Documents missing after upgrading to Sonoma

I upgraded to Sonoma, and when I looked at my folders on my Mac that are stored on icloud, they were missing. They are still in the cloud and I can access them from my PC. What happened and how can I restore them on my macbook?

ICloud files vanished I had a problem with a document that was created on my macbook and was able to access it just fine until today when I just couldn't open it and I could not download it from the ICloud. I don't understand why was it not localy stored on my mac why did I have to download from ICloud but whatever. So I turned off and on the ICloud syncing on my mac to discover that the document and other files went completely missing, they worked just fine the last time I opened them and now they vanished.

iCloud "deleted" all Documents and Desktop files, where are them? Under iCloud I activated the option: Desktop and Document Folders Keep your Desktop and Documents folders in sync with iCloud... I didn't press the accept button, I just activated the option to test. Automatically, my Desktop and Documents files disappeared and started moving to iCloud. I tried to disable the option hoping to find my files there again, but they are not restored there, however they are still being uploaded to iCloud (more than 40GB... it would take days!). I don't understand this absurd iCloud behavior, how can I restore my files locally to Desktop/Documents folders? Where are they locally if I don't see them locally but iCloud still keeps uploading them?
