Standby Mode not staying on iPhone 15 Pro

I have a 15pro with the most up to date version of IOS. I want to use the standby mode as a clock at night

No matter what I do with settings the screen goes off after approximately 30 seconds and I have to tap or move my hand to get it back on.

I have tried forcing restart, resetting the phone, checking the settings but I can’t understand why.

It seems to be an intermittent issue for many users?

I’m also using an apple mag safe charger and genuine apple mag safe case

I was having the same problem intermittently and found that when the phone was in low power mode (which it often is at night) the screen shut off after about 20 second even though it was set to never. Turning off low power mode resolved the issue. This is still a bug in my book as the phone has to be charging to go on standby.

I have found a work around, not ideal and I really hope Apple fix this in an update.

The mag safe stand holds the phone at a slight angle, not the same angle if it was on its side.

So I put my phone on its side with a usb c charger and it stayed on all night!!

I put it back on the stand and it goes off after 30 seconds. So it appears it’s something to do with the internal gyroscope and the settings for standby clashing.

Come on apple, surely this is simple stuff considering how advanced the devices have become

@whiteboy2003

i spoke with support yesterday too. They wanted me to do a long procedure to find out the firmware level of my MagSafe charger (drain battery to 10%, throw on charger and charge to 90%, then check the firmware in the settings). I told them that was kinda a joke! How am I to know when it hits 90% durning the night, ha ha.

then they told me to just try a Hard Reset! I tested it last night and it worked! Stayed on all night and no cutting out!!

follow this procedure perfectly to get the same result:

Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 10-20 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear, the one with the "slider" to turn the device off included)

I’m not so sure, this is from MacStories in depth view of standby…

“There’s also a Night Mode built into StandBy, which can be deactivated in Settings. When the lights are dimmed, the StandBy screen turns red, so it doesn’t shine brightly in your eyes as you try to sleep. A short time after entering Night Mode, StandBy turns off, so your screen is completely dark, but with a wave of your hand, it will light back up if you want to check the time, although this can be turned off in settings if you prefer.”

For us who have the problem, I had my 15 Pro Max on a regular cord and a "reading" pad that puts the phone horizontally, never had any issues with "standby" mode. It stayed "ON" all night. I purchased an Apple Magsafe and the issue started intermittent. I purchased an aftermarket Magsafe charger, same problem. Went back to my "regular" stand, no problem for days... Tried another charger, another cable, another Magsafe. As said, for me, as soon as I plug a cable in it and put it horizontally, it works fine. And all of us affected by this, it's intermittent.

Hello JBN1701,

We totally understand wanting the StandBy feature to work after purchasing the MagSafe charging stand.

You can check the firmware version of the MagSafe charger and update it with the following steps, if needed:

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on General
  3. Tap on About
  4. Tap on [MagSafe Charger] (It can take up to 5 minutes for the stand to appear here.)
  5. If the firmware version is lower than 274.0.0.0, follow these steps:
    1. Use your iPhone until the battery is down to a 10% charge.
    2. Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi and can connect to the Internet.
    3. Attach your iPhone to the MagSafe charger and leave it charging until the battery reaches 90% or higher.
    4. Verify that the firmware version on your MagSafe charger has been upgraded to 275.0.0.0 by going to Settings > General > About > [MagSafe Charger]

Note: It may take a few attempts, especially if you don't allow the device to sit charging long enough.

If the issue continues to occur, then it would be best to contact Apple Support directly: Get Support

They will need to take it from here.

Have a lovely day!

Try this:

  • Plug your phone with USB-C, put it on the side using anything to keep it on the side, it will stay "ON" all night as another user said, always work for me.

  • Put your phone on your mag charger, it will turn off randomly, sometimes it works, sometimes not...

I HOPE they will fix it in a near future but at the moment, the only way it works all the time is by having a USB-C cable plugged in and put at an angle (ie not using the magsafe charger), try it and let me know.

I'm having the same issue with my 15 pro max. Here is what I think it is. while the phone is actively charging (phone is less than 100% charged) the display will stay on. The problem arises while you're sleeping and the phone reaches 100% charged and obviously stops actively charging. The phone then will kick off the display. The way I found this was my magnetic charger was not positioned correctly and was charging then not charging (green battery display kept switching from green to white) everytime it went to white(not charging) the display kicked off. No way I know to fix, apple needs a bypass to the software that allows display to work only if charging OR battery is at 100%

I’m running the latest…iOS 17.1.1 and the clock face is the first one…”Clock 1”, I think?? FWIW, I tried them all with negative results.

I think I found the solution after searching around the forum. It appears that in:

  • Settings
  • Face ID/Passcodes
  • Scroll down to “Allow Access When Locked” selections
  • Find “Lock Screen Widgets”, and slide on to green

For the last 20min, it appears to be working correctly now. Funny thing is, I just happen to check the clock when it showed 10:10 and it really was 10:10, 😂😂

This is the clock face I was seeing before,

That's not what the OP is asking... He's asking to have it stay ON and whatever he tries it doesn't.

So if I follow as I said, if I put my 15 Pro Max horizontally, plugged in, on an angle, it will alway display the standby mode

If I put it either on my Apple Magsafe or a third party Magsafe charger, randomly, one night it will stay ON all night, another it won't but on an angle with a charging cable plugged in with a regular adapter, it will work.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP question but the way I understand it, he says "No matter what I do with settings the screen goes off after approximately 30 seconds and I have to tap or move my hand to get it back on." he never stated he wanted it off...

Hi JBN1701,

If StandBy mode is turning off after 30 seconds, is the screen locking? As seen in Use StandBy to view information at a distance while iPhone is charging:

With the Always On display (on iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max), StandBy stays on to show useful information.

Learn more about Always On Display setting here: Keep the iPhone display on longer.

Take care.
