AI Image Background Remover for macOS?

macOS has a built-in AI Image Remover function on Apple Silicon powered Macs (right click on an image file -> Quick Actions -> Remove background). However, it’s not the best for hair details. On the other hand, we have the website remove.bg that does a fantastic job of removing backgrounds flawlessly while keeping hair details, but it’s insanely expensive when you have hundreds of images. Is anyone aware of an AI/Machine Learning background remover for Mac with batch processing that has a perpetual license and cost less than $100 USD? Alternatively an annual subscription ≈ 30 dollars?

UPDATE: I tried “AI Batch Background Eraser” by Ivan Blayasoft from the Mac App Store but it won’t output an image for some reason?

After some testing, my current recommendations are:

  • Final Cut Pro by Apple: Import the image or video file into Final Cut Pro, create a clean plate without the actor, make the clean plate image 1 frame long and put it before the image or video file containing the actor. Select both and create a Compound Clip. Add the Scene Removal Mask effect and keep the default settings. This will give you a good result where the actors hair details are preserved. Also make sure the settings for the timeline is set to render as ProRes 4444 to keep the transparent background.

  • AI Batch Background Eraser by Ivan Blayasoft: This current version has some bugs. You need to remove special characters like "å ä ö Å Ä Ö" from imported filenames for the software to be able to export. Also, the software doesn't purge/clean the RAM between each image, resulting in a few images taking up a few hundred GB of RAM usage. Hopefully the developer can improve this in the future. The result is pretty good though, as it preserves hair details for actors without having to create a clean plate.

Ran a Shortcut solution earlier that chose a folder and then used the Remove background action in a repeat loop on the sample folder images. Some results were quite good and objects with a white background showing through them removed the exterior background and only part of the white background showing through the image object. So not 100%.

Also, images with existing edge transparency had some of that transparency gobbled up by this action, leaving some poor results.
