I see my backup files on time machine but I can't click onto them to open

Basically you "Enter Time Machine" to restore a file. That facility is reached by opening the TM icon in your menu.

Trying to open a TM dataset in Finder can easily damage it.

What exactly do you want to do?

I have backup on time machine going back to 2015 I am trying to retrieve old files and I can not click on the file and have it open
