macOS Catalina new battery won’t charge

My 2012 MacBook Pro with original battery only lasts 4 hours but does charge to 100%. I’ve tried replacing twice, both new batteries will not charge, when I put the original back in, it will charge. The 1st new battery showed status as “Service Recommended”. The 2nd replacement will not let me add battery status to the tool bar. Is it probable that both replacement batteries are bad?
