Updated to iOS 17.0.2. Notifications will not sound in Messages. Volume is turned up.
When using Safari and tap in box to Google, search box moves toward top of phone out of sight. Will still allow typing in box. Just can’t see box.

Do you receive notification sounds for other apps? If you haven't already, make sure you don't have a Focus enabled: Use Focus on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
Try switching to a different notification sound in Settings > Messages > Notifications to see if the behavior is isolated to a specific tone.
