Apple doesn't send you the update, if your phone qualifies, you can install the update yourself.

• If you have an iPhone 5S or 6/6plus, the highest you can update to is 12.5.7

• If you have an iPhone 6S through 7, or SE 1st generation, you can update to 15.8.2

• If you have an iPhone 8 or X, you can update to 16.7.7

• If you have an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), or XR through 15, you can update to 17.4.1

Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Done with Apple. As an iPhone X user, I guess I will not be getting another Apple watch since it can no longer be updated. I'm really sorry that I ever bought this watch now, since I'm not about to buy a new iPhone just so I can update the watch. I feel totally ripped off by Apple. When I do upgrade, I can assure you it won't be with another iPhone or Apple watch.

And when you buy a phone from another manufacturer at some point, it too will no longer be able to keep up with fast moving technology updates. There is no such thing as a futureproof cell phone, which for as many years as you can use it will be able to be updated to whatever the current OS version is. NO DEVICE can or will promise to do that.

The mere fact you are upset about not getting an update for a phone released 7 years ago, is an amazing testament to the longevity of the device itself.

Enjoy whatever you buy next, but it too will one day be past its useful live.
