Autocorrect ignores "Learn Spelling" words on IPad Pages

I am new to pages but have recently begun to use iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard to compose. So nice! I usually use Word for Mac on my MacBook to compose and am used to autocorrect not ignoring things I've added to my dictionary. Yet consistently in Pages I will type a word that pages has ostensibly learned and then it will autocorrect it. I go back and fix the word and check to make sure it says "unlearn spelling" so I know it has been marked correctly and invariably it does so the words are correctly marked. It changes them to something else despite the learned spelling as it's being composed--I'm not running spell check over the whole doc.

Help? How do I get it to quit ignoring the words I've told it to learn? I love autocorrect for general typing messiness, so i would prefer not to turn it off completely.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 16
