Importing Photos to an Established Album

When you drag a photo from your Desktop directly into an album in the sidebar of photos, the photo should be added to the album. But when you drag the photo into folder in the sidebar, Photos will create a new album, because folders in Photos can only contain albums or folders, but not photos. So Photos has to create an additional folder.

To get started, can you provide us with additional information on exactly how you're importing the photos into the album?

We ask because when following the steps listed below from the following resource, we're not seeing the same outcome and no untitled album is being created when importing photos to a specific album: Create and work with albums in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

Add photos to an existing album

1. In the Photos app  on your Mac, select the photos you want to add. 

2. Do one of the following:

* Drag the selected photos to an album in the sidebar.

* Control-click one of the selected photos and choose Add To > [album name].

* Drag the thumbnail in the selection indicator at the top of the window to an album in the sidebar.

Tip: To add photos to an existing album from a folder in the Finder, drag the folder to the album in the sidebar. If you selected the “Copy items to the Photos library” option in Photos settings, the photos are added to your Photos library. To save storage space, you can delete the photos from the folder in the Finder.
