Tagging Email Messages

With Sonoma, my favorite email plugin MailTags will no longer be supported.

Is there an alternative solution to be able to use the Apple Mail application and tag messages?

third party apps may take some time to sort issues w/ the latest Sonoma —

In general Plug-ins are no longer supported in Mail for security reasons. The new way is "extensions," I would start your search there...

Flag feature is one alternative if it suits your needs:

I've found the solution to all this. I have Outlook Mac 2021 and by switching the app back to Legacy Outlook found that all emails can be tagged just like in Mailtags. Whether POP, IMAP, etc. Outlook Legacy allows one to apply tags and rules to any and all emails. Instead of "Tags" it's called "Categories" in Outlook. You can define as many categories as you like and colour code them and then filter your emails accordingly. Unfortunately, unless Smallcubed comes up with an absolutely brilliant new email client, I'll be sticking with Outlook.

I understand wanting to stay as close to Apple apps as possible, but in this case, have you tried out or experimented with Thunderbird? It's open source and perhaps you'd have better luck finding plugins for that. By the way, If you go to the App Store and search "mail extensions", there are a huge amount of items that return. Haven't spent too much time reviewing them except to see that there are many. Hopefully developers will find their way to the new extensions methodology in Apple Mail.

I have this same issue. The excuse that tagging doesn't work due to plug ins not being supported is a red herring and there's no excuse by Apple to implement something like tagging. Thunderbird allows you to tag IMAP & POP email accounts no problem as well as defining your own list of customized and named tags. Apple could do this easily by allowing the user to customize, name and rename a list of Flags in Apple Mail which would be pretty much the same thing as tagging. Flags already exist in Apple Mail but it's fixed to colours only. Not customizable. I'd much prefer to stay with Apple Mail but since tagging is no longer supported I've had to move to Microsoft Outlook although that doesn't allow tagging for IMAP accounts. So now I'm stuck with using Outlook for my business email and Thunderbird for my personal email with is Google Mail and another that is IMAP. If Thunderbird had a nicer UI, I'd go with that completely. If Apple Mail supported customizable flags, I would go with that for all my email accounts. Please get it together Apple. It's not that difficult to implement user customizable flags.

i too have searched high and low for a tag based Email program, and believe none exist hence why i feel into using MailTags. Even Outlook for Mac doesnt have the Categories function enabled and ive never known why not.

I too am staying on Ventura so MailTags works. Smallcubed have said they are working on a Mail app which incorporates Tags but i dont know how long this will take them, if the first version will be useful.

and im looking for any alternatives too...

i am aware of the flagging feature, which is not a replacement (nor intended to be) for tagging emails.

yes, I am aware of the reasons and reasoning behind the need to drop plugins.

unfortunately, they will not be able to sort their issues out. The path they have chosen is to create a competing email application with their features integrated. I would prefer to stick with Apple mail, but the loss of tagging is to big.

I relied heavily on Mailtags to organize my email. Specifically, assigning a color tag based on the type of email project (business inquiry, current client, prospective client, vendor, etc). This system worked well for me for years—until Sonoma. Had anyone found an alternative app or extension to Apple Mail that’s primarily organizational?
