Wifi turns itself on every couple of hours

I use my phone to hotspot my internet at home so I don’t need the Wifi turned on, however, each time I manually turn the Wifi off in settings (not the control centre) I find that the Wifi has been turned back on after only a few hours! Is this a new setting in iOS? How can I turn off Wifi so it will only come back on when I turn it back on?

cheers

Hi Mingoslkd,

Thanks for your response. After a little experimenting I have found, as you have just mentioned, that to use my phone as a wifi hotspot, wifi must be turned 'on'. I guess my error was based on some incorrect thinking about the wifi function of the phone, that wifi was only used as to connect to wifi signals. But now, after reading your response and having conducted my own tests it makes sense that wifi must be active for wifi hot-spotting as this enables the two-way-street that is wifi. It's in the name, isn't it, "wifi hotspot"!

Thanks again for your help, I guess I just needed a sounding board to better understand what I am doing here.

Cheers

Daniel

Hello Drat76,

Do you have 'Ask to Join Networks' disabled? If so, then it will automatically join previously known networks. You will want to go to the following section:

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on Wi-Fi
  3. Tap on 'Ask to Join Networks'
  4. Tap on either 'Notify' or 'Ask'

If you wish to remove a Wi-Fi network, you can follow:

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on Wi-Fi
  3. Tap on the 'i' next to the Wi-Fi name
  4. Tap 'Forget this Network'

Let us know if this helps out.

Take care.

Hello Drat76,

Do you have any VPN or managed profiles enabled on your device? You can check in: Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Are there any third party network or security apps installed to your device at this time?

It can also help to restart and update your device:

Also, how are you connecting your other devices to your iPhone's Personal Hotspot? If using Wi-Fi, then yes, you'll need to have Wi-Fi turned on. This page shows the various ways to connect other devices to your iPhone's hotspot:

Please reply back if need to continue.

Cheers!

Hey Destiny 241,

Thank you for your suggestions, I checked my wifi settings and I have ‘Ask to join networks’ set to ‘Ask’.

I am starting to think that this might have something to do with using my phone as a hotspot; maybe the wifi needs to be active to use phone as hotspot?? The reason I am thinking this is because there are no other wifi sources in my house and yet the wifi feature on my iPhone 14 Pro (iOS 17.0.1) still turns itself on after being manually turned off.

Any other thoughts/ideas?

Thanks again.
