I remember chatting with Microsoft not too long ago, and going through this to set up other accounts to be accessed on Mail, Outlook, and on other Apps. Good point. Took it as if the OP is trying to add the outlook.com domain to the Mail app. So, I may have mistaken this.

I think your approach to this by adding his email to the built in email app is a viable solution too.

I took it as he wanted to install Outlook which on that phone won't work.
