macOS Sonoma crashes when using QuickTime Player

When I use quicktime to play a short mp4 that works in many other plays, quicktime freeze almost 100% of the time leading a soft-reboot (login out of the user).

I have sent crash report multiple times but this has been there for a long time.

Playing a mp4 clip is such a common activity and both quicktime and Mac are made by Apple, but we are still experiencing something one would do in the 90s.

Apple, no matter what's the root cause, you need to upgrade to being a software company!

M1 with MacOS 14.2.1 (23C71).

I am about to embark on two more projects for my client and can't believe that Apple has not addressed this. MASSIVE productivity fail. How has Apple not prioritized and included this in most recent update?! Even long term clients like mine don't allow for excuses like "I'm sorry Apple hasn't fixed this thing I've done for you for the last 3 years". They say "I'm going to find someone who can do this now".

And in this economy, my core business is gone if I can't create the video to support the actual strategy.

Well now we have the issue listed on a university's campus website as it has undoubtably been affecting many students that have upgraded their MacBooks to macOS Sonoma. They have linked back to this thread as reference. This is a very serious issue with macOS Sonoma that needs to be fixed ASAP.

It does not resolve for me in this way either. I have had this problem for multiple months now. Huge productivity blocker in workflow for my clients. Creating video summaries of customer insights is a key component of what I do for tech companies building consumer Gen AI products. Clients have been forgiving for the last 4-5 months since this issue developed but also not looking forward to reverting to Ventura.

At this point, it's very soon after Sonoma's birth so as is the usual case many bug fixes and security updates will be forthcoming.

I am having the same problem. QuickTime and quickView are crashing. This is not only me, colleagues are facing it. I have AppleCare enterprise, how to report it?

The problem is still there. Why apple is so slow fixing this BIG problem???

having same prob. newest Imac M3, crashing on quicktime 5x today already !

I don't have any displays attached and Quicktime crashes constantly. I've tried downloading it again, updating Sonoma again, cold re-booting. Nothing works.

The issue appears to be related to using an external display. Which maybe every media professional in the world uses. It's going to be annoying if it only affects screens not made by Apple.

Yes, same issue here when connected to Thunderbolt display, which previous to Sonoma worked fine.

Did you have the same issue? What was the solution you found. Genius Bar won't be able to help with an operating system bug.

Just checking in here to confirm that Sonoma 14.4 does not solve the issue. Mirrored mode is still unusable for QuickTime playback.

Just because I read it in this thread: using the Apple AV adapter OR a dedicated USB-C to DisplayPort adapter doesn't make a difference. Both make the system crash. Same goes for HDMI adapters.
