Strange mouse click issue after updating Sonoma on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro M1 2020, it's having some strange mouse click issues right after I updated to macOS Sonoma. Anyone having the same problem? I hope Apple fixes the problem soon, it's irritating.

It was happening because I had McAfee total protection enabled. It's all fixed, mcAfee total protection will have to come out with an an update so it will be compatible with macOS Sonoma. I contacted Apple about it and they was doing a screen share. I disabled the virus protection.

I just want to add here. An Apple support contacted me earlier about this issue. Well, they don't really know what's happening they just contacted me to go over the issues and they took some logs on my mac. They say that a good number of mac has the same issue but they don't have any idea what causing it. But tonight I discovered something about the wireless-connected device that might be causing it.

In my setup, I have a Bluetooth keyboard (Logitech k380) and Logitech MX Master 3.

Issues appeared when I connected my mouse via Bluetooth or dongle and when I turned it off the issue disappeared. I think it is because of the software (logi Option+) but I tried connecting my other Bluetooth mouse (Generic one with no software needed just connected via Bluetooth) and I got the same issue so it's not on the software.

But I also have my keyboard connected via Bluetooth and It has no problem. The problems only appear when a wireless mouse is connected (bt or dongle). The wired mouse works perfectly fine.

Guys, I have an update for my issue so here I am sharing what is causing the problem for my case

since the issue was very annoying for me I decided to use my laptop for finish my daily task and add my Mx Master 3 mouse.

But the issue is still on my laptop which has not updated to the latest OS version (Sonoma)

So I searched Google for an online mouse test site and found this https://devicetests.com/mouse-test where I saw one of the buttons under "Thumb wheel" is always pressed so I clicked a few times on the button to release the press and wola the issue was solved.

Now when it's happening I test my mouse online and I can see the button was pressed.Since my problem is solved after 10 days I thought to share it with the community.

- Thanks

SIMPLE EASY FIX TO RESTORE DOUBLE CLICK.

I have found a very quick – but still temporary - fix for the misfunctioning mouse problem with Sonoma.

I upgraded to Sonoma when it was first released, and my mouse behaved fine until today 20th March. With me the symptoms are that double left click stopped working.

Luckily, I happened to instantly find a fix – which works for me each time:

Click on Settings and then click on “Mouse” in the Settings Menu. You only need to open the Mouse settings and move your cursor in the settings window and strangely enough this immediately fixes it.

You don’t need to disable anything or fiddle with the mouse settings. Close the settings window and check your mouse behaviour and it should all work fine again  - at least for an hour so, because as we know, the problem regularly re-occurs.

Apple need to sort this bug out quickly. I would suggest they look at the mouse settings window environment. It can’t be that hard to fix what is clearly such a wide spread and incapacitating programming error.

So I have figured it out with some help from TechSupport at Logi. My S2 mouse was double clicking and not able to hold a drag and drop. This started with Sonoma and got worse as time went on (and more Sonoma updates) till I just could not use the mouse any more and resorted to my old wired Mighty Mouse ! I tried with other Macs and the same issue existed ... logically it means there is a Sonoma/Logi issue right ? Until I tried reversing the button commands, making the right click primary and not the left. Vuala ... the "primary click" issue is gone. If it was a software issue it would persist ... it is therefore a hardware issue. I tried to unstick or cleanse the left button with compressed air ... no joy ... I will try digging at it with a needle ... but basically its hardware and my mouse is out of warranty for a couple of years now. Ironically I bought the S2 to replace an older Logi"tech" M558 wireless mouse that had developed a similar (erratic) problem ... which I suspect to be a Mac BT issue ... or maybe my office is sitting plumb on top of the buildings power source causing great interference ... but anyway, my problem is hardware. Considering my BT MiniM1 issues, time to get myself a new 2.4GHz dongle mouse. I hope this helps some.

OMG! I had a game that would no longer respond to mouse clicks after Sonoma 14.1. and subsequent updates. Very frustrating. But lo and behold: update 14.4 DID FIX the problem: my trackpad and mouse are again working on the game!

So appartently they DID have a problem with the click registration system, and they DID change things to it. For me it worked, hope they continue to also fix all the other problems of you all. But clearly: it is NOT due to the mouse (or any other interface instrument).

Loyal to Apple since 20+ years (but lately hesitating....)

Currently using macbook air apple m1 chip from 2020. I updated to sonoma 14.5 recently and am currently experiencing the same issue. I think imma switch to a windows computer cuz this issue is getting in the way of a bunch of stuff im trying to work on.

EDIT 1: sometimes it starts working again when i turn off bluetooth. could be a coincidence but idk since it only sometimes fixes the issue i think

EDIT 2: after switching back and forth a few times it seems turning off bluetooth is fixing the problem consistently. I would like to be able to use a bluetooth mouse so this is kind of irritating but at least the computer is mostly functioning as intended now.

Just a heads up. I have a Logitech MX Master 3 S mouse and MX Keyboard hooked to my iMac via bluetooth. I am currently running Ventura version 13.6.

I just checked with Logitech support and currently there is only support for Ventura. I was told there are working on a version for Sonoma. So right now you may have some issues until they come out with an upgrade.

Personally if I upgrade to Sonoma and have issues I will go back to my Apple mouse & keyboard until they come out with full support for Sonoma.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

Since updating to Sonoma my mouse has become my worst enemy like so many have reported. All my mice were USB plug-in wireless Logitech mice. Mouse functioning became incredibly inconsistent and frustrating after the update!

SOLUTION: Switching to wireless bluetooth mice brought mouse functions back to normal for all 3 of my macs: m1 mac mini, an m2 mac mini and an m1 Macbook Air. Pretty sneaky of Apple to make non-apple USB wireless mice almost unuseable. But the good news is that you don't have to shell big bucks for a magic Mouse. Wireless bluetooth logitech and magic mouse knockoffs so far have worked fine for me. Hated to replace 3 perfectly useable mice, but was worth it given the frustration level I was experienceing.

I think the problem is with Logitech Logi+ software. It auto updated the firmware on the mouse causing my issue. Logitech said it was the physical mouse do purchased the MX 3s. It was fine on another system but when I connected it to my MBP it did the same things. To fix it I put on Logi+ 12 and was trying to force different Firmware on. Not sure which corrected it but it fixed the MBP and Windows TouchPad problems as well.

I removed the Logi+ software. I have had alot of problems after putting it on systems and now that things are back to normal. It's not coming back on.

Lost a lot of sleep over this, but I think I finally solved it on my end.

I'm on a 16-inch i9 Pro running Sonoma 14.5 (23F79). My mouse is a Logitech Pebble M350.

The issue gets triggered with wireless mouses, connected either through bluetooth or USB receiver. Never encountered the issue with wired mouses.

What fixed it was to toggle Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad

is present under System SettingsAccessibilityPointer Control.

Hope this helps.

This might be overkill, but this is what I did to fix the issue (feel free to tweak my solution):

System Settings ==> Desktop & Dock ==>

Desktop & Stage Manager

Show Items

      • Uncheck On Desktop
      • Uncheck In Stage Manager

Click wallpaper to reveal desktop ==> Set to Only in Stage Manager

Widgets

Show Widgets

      • Uncheck On Desktop
      • Uncheck In Stage Manager

Use iPhone Widgets ==> Turn off

Reboot computer
