Strange mouse click issue after updating Sonoma on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro M1 2020, it's having some strange mouse click issues right after I updated to macOS Sonoma. Anyone having the same problem? I hope Apple fixes the problem soon, it's irritating.

It was happening because I had McAfee total protection enabled. It's all fixed, mcAfee total protection will have to come out with an an update so it will be compatible with macOS Sonoma. I contacted Apple about it and they was doing a screen share. I disabled the virus protection.

I have the exact same problem (Firefox seems to lose focus so I can't click hyperlinks etc.). I use a Logitech Lift mouse. I tried all the solutions I could find on the Internet to fix this error, but nothing worked. I've tried turning off Bluetooth, disconnecting the USB hub, and a ton of other fixes, but this issue still persists in Sonoma 14.1. I thought it was a Firefox issue, but Safari also has this bug. The only temporary solution is to click somewhere on the desktop and then again in the browser, or use Mission Control and click the browser. We need fix for this ASAP.

Edit:

This error appears to be related to the middle mouse button. When I stopped using it completely(for clicking and scrolling), the mouse behavior bug no longer exists. I wonder if this problem is related to Sonoma or Logitech.

Happening on my M2 Mac Mini after updating to Sonoma. Sometimes all I get is a pointer when hovering over a link instead of the hand. Quite annoying.

What I have discovered though is that if I turn on Stage Manager, which I hate, the issue goes away. Turn it off and it comes straight back.

I am using an MX Master 3 but it also happens when I use the Magic Mouse.

I hit the same issue on my MacBook Pro 2018 with Sonoma 14.2

With Logitech MX Master 3s + Bolt Dongle: All menus cannot be clicked. These include application menu at the top of the screen, bookmark in bookmark bar in Safari; Hovering also doesn't work.

Switched back to my Logitech MX Master 2s, everything works with the same MacBook Pro with Sonoma. Definitely some software issue between Sonoma and Logitech.

With a Logitech G603 and the latest Sonoma (14.3.1), the mouse was it semi-unusable; double clicking instead single click, intermittent and strange behaviour... Just driving me crazy!

Tried everything you suggested but nothing.

And then, after trying other two old Logitech mouse I had (same problems, USB and Bluetooth), putting back the G603 everythings turn back to normal! Absurd. Like usign other mouses reset something at system level...

I dont know, now it works, but Apple should face the problem and fix it as soon as possible.

I'm using a Mac Studio in 14.3.1. What I've discovered is that you can select items in the pull-down menu if you maintain pressure on the mouse button (left, in this case) slide down to the item you want, and then release. This is not the old behavior (which I would prefer) of clicking on the menu title and then clicking on the option desired.

For those of you still having this issue, please try what was suggested in this thread by dcmaccer

This was the only thing that worked and I haven't had any additional problems come up based on the change in over two weeks.

The link icon in this forum does not work so I can't get the link to his thread and replying it doesn't seem to bring it to the front, so also pasting what he posted:

"This might be overkill, but this is what I did to fix the issue (feel free to tweak my solution):

System Settings ==> Desktop & Dock ==>

Desktop & Stage Manager

Show Items

      • Uncheck On Desktop
  • Uncheck In Stage Manager

Click wallpaper to reveal desktop ==> Set to Only in Stage Manager

Widgets

Show Widgets

      • Uncheck On Desktop
  • Uncheck In Stage Manager

Use iPhone Widgets ==> Turn off

Reboot computer"

I fixed mine in the following way. I had a razor mouse plugged via USB-c, had to completely disconnect the cable from the computer and plug in a different mouse. Some how this freed everything that was wrong with the mouse and it’s functions.

This is horrible apple care to it’s customers. specially since there are multiple people reporting the same problem. I dropped more than $4k on this Mac Studio… I would expect something as simple as this to be addressed somehow by an Apple tech…

This solved my issue! The only things in this list that I had to change were turning off "Use iPhone Widgets" and setting reveal desktop to "Online in Stage Manager". All other settings were already unchecked. Even before rebooting it fixed my issues.

The issues I was experiencing were the following:

  • My bluetooth mouse would intermittently not select text or not select all of it.
  • It would intermittently fail to click and drag properly (this included resizing windows, moving files, etc.)
  • Basically any action that involved clicking, holding, and dragging was not working properly.

Yesterday i tried to use just the mac without my ipad linked with Sidecar as a separate monitor.

No issues at all

I have a Mac m1 and a 12,9" Ipad (both updated to last ios version) linked by wifi (no cable / no bluetooth) and the freezing problem happens when i have two windows open on ipad , several on mac and i scroll a page on a browser or a mail client

I think you're onto something. If I go to the mouse test site and click the middle button, eventually it "sticks" (picture shows it as not released) and then the menu breaks. If I click the middle mouse button juntil it "unsticks", the menu is fixed. I tried this a few times and it appeared to be reliable. I'm wondering if Apple is not getting the "mouse-up" event on some clicks. We also have a problem when we drag that we can't let go of the object - again, maybe the mouse-up isn't getting through.

Another thing we noted is that moving the mouse over a broken submenu lights up items under the menu and you'll get an i-beam if you're on a menu item that's on top of an input area - so the OS thinks you're on the layer under the menu.

Since my post above (a few days ago) I have paired an old Magic Mouse v1 - which I had on my old iMac - to my MacBook … and have experienced no issues.

But I still feel like there must be a bug in macOS / Bluetooth connectivity in Sonoma given all the people that are experiencing issues.

Over the next few days I’ll try the Magic Mouse 2 with my old iMac to see if I can rule out a hardware issue with the MM2. Still feels like a software issue, given the MM2 often works perfectly then all of a sudden scrolling in a particular window starts sticking.
