80% Charge Limit no longer working

I have an iPhone 15 Pro running 17.0.2 and have set my battery charge limit to 80%.

For the first few days, it worked perfectly. Then, it started charging to 100%.

I understand from Apple’s support site that this can happen for calibration purposes. But it’s now been 5 days and the battery is ALWAYS charging to 100% whether I use a cable, an official MagSafe charger or a third-party wireless charger.

The behaviour started under iOS 17.0 but is the same under 17.0.2

How can I solve this.

FIXED. For some reason, it seems that once the phone does charge over 80%, whatever apple is using to sense the battery is breaching the 80% threshold stops working, so it needs resetting. To do this follow these instructions:-

  1. Wait until the phone is well under 80% - say at least 70% or lower (trying to fix this when the charge is already over 80% doesn't work).
  2. In settings, change the charging optimisation setting to "None"
  3. Reboot your iphone
  4. Plug your iPhone in to charge for say 10 seconds.
  5. Unplug your iphone
  6. Change the charging optimisation method back to "80% Limit"
  7. Charge as usual

This fixed it for me. Points 4 and 5 may not be needed, but these are the steps I followed in an attempt to force the phone to look at a new way of monitoring the charge before I changed it back to 80% Limit, and it worked, so I guess all the steps might be needed for you too.

Good luck, and reply to let me know if it works for you!

Cheers,

Meanwhile, for me this solution still works. Every now and then it starts to charge over the 80%. All I do then is allow my phone discharged to around 70%, go into settings and turn off all battery charging optimisation. Then reboot your phone, then go back into settings and turn the 80% limit back on. Then it is fixed again.

Good luck!

I don’t think this has been resolved. I got it working again by switching it to ‘optimised battery charging’ for a day or so, then switching it back. But that solution only lasted a few days I’m back to it not working again, at all.

It does say in the documentation that the phone does need to charge all the way to 100% occasionally. However, for me, it’s more the other way round. It charges to 80% for the first week or so, then it just stops working altogether.

I am finding that you are best to let it go to 100% so that it can properly recalibrate the health and status of your battery (per apple documentation), then I just let it discharge to below 70%, turn off battery optimisation all together, reboot the phone, then turn battery optimisation back to 80% limit, which fixes it for around a week or two until the phone needs to recalibrate again.
