IOS 17 on iPhone 15 Pro Max converting iMessage to text

I’ve occasionally had issues where iMessage chats between 2 iPhone users are spontaneously converted to text. Since upgrading to my iPhone 15 Pro Max (IOS 17.0.2) this seems to be happening more often. Any ideas/suggestions?

Hello BayouBwana,

iMessage does need both parties to be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data. If not, then the message will send as SMS.

What is the difference between iMessage and SMS/MMS? - Apple Support

Next time you see this happen, verify you're connected as above, and if so, ask the other party if they are also.

If both of you are connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, but the message is still showing as SMS (green), you'll want to contact Apple Support. They can take a look at why this could be happening.

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
