Apple Watch dinging

I have an Apple Watch 7 with both WiFi and Cel. I keep my sound off, but haptics on so I hear no ding, but get a vibration if I receive a text or notification. Ever since the latest upgrade to 10.0.1, my watch will ding when I get a text from my wife and certain emails. I have my sound set to silent mode and also off. I do have the volume set to max, but why am I still getting notification sounds. I did not have this before the upgrade and changed no settings.

Hi Lilisbuddy,

We appreciate those details. You may consider unpairing and re-pairing your watch to see if the issue persists after doing so. Here's how: Unpair and erase your Apple Watch.

"Before you start

  • If you have the iPhone that your Apple Watch is paired with, you should follow the steps to unpair your Apple Watch. This removes Activation Lock from your Apple Watch as well as erasing all its content and settings. If you don't have the paired iPhone, you can erase your Apple Watch, but Activation Lock will remain.
  • If you're using your Apple Watch with a transit card in the Wallet app, remove your transit card from your Apple Watch before you unpair.
  • Apple Watch doesn't have a physical SIM slot or reset button — the holes in your Apple Watch case are there to allow sound to and from the microphone and speakers, and to allow water-depth measurement on Apple Watch Ultra. To avoid damage, don't insert any object into the holes in your Apple Watch case.

How to unpair and erase your Apple Watch if you have your iPhone

  1. Keep your Apple Watch and iPhone close together as you unpair them.
  2. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Go to the My Watch tab and tap All Watches.
  4. Tap the info button  next to the watch that you want to unpair.
  5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
  6. Tap Unpair [your Apple Watch name].
  7. For GPS + Cellular models, choose whether to keep or remove your cellular plan.
    • If you want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, keep your plan.
    • If you don't want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, remove your plan. If you aren't going to pair with a different watch or iPhone, you might need to contact your carrier to cancel your cellular subscription.

8. Type your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock, then tap Unpair.

Before erasing all content and settings on your Apple Watch, your iPhone creates a new backup of your Apple Watch. You can use the backup to restore a new Apple Watch. After your Apple Watch unpairs, you'll see the Start Pairing message.

Now you can set up your Apple Watch again or turn it off if you're selling it or giving it away."

Take care.

Hi Lilisbuddy,

From the information provided it appears you have correctly configured your device to function as desired based on the support article Change the audio and notification settings on your Apple Watch.

As you indicate this behavior began after updating, try toggling the Silent Mode feature off and back on and restart the Apple Watch. Test the Theater Mode to see if that works as designed per Use Control Center on Apple Watch.

Regards.

Before I read your reply, I already did everything you mentioned, but then did it again with no basic change. The only thing different now is that the only dings I get is when my wife sends me a text. Other texts do not ding. Silent is still red on the control panel and silent mode is toggled on ( green ) in the settings under sounds and haptics. I have not made any changes that I am aware of since I had my iPhone 14 Pro to my iPhone 15 Pro and this was not an issue when I had IOS 16 as it only began after my new iPhone 15 Pro was installed with IOS 17 and I am not running IOS 17.0.3 I keep the sound on my iPhone off most all of the time.

Thank you for the suggestion about unpairing the watch. Actually at this point, I have decided to do nothing as it seems that the only time the watch now dings is if my wife sends me an iMessage. It does not make any sound from any other messages, nor does it make any sound when an email or other notification comes in. So I actually like knowing that the message is from my wife, as I do not always look every time that I feel the haptic vibration. In the event things should change when 17.1 comes out for the phone with a new watch update, I will report back.
