All solutions given on how to sort photo's newest to oldest are pointing to Albums. But as I don't create albums in my iphone, is it possible to still show newest photo at the top in Photos app without creating separate album?

No, that is not possible. All albums created by photos automatically are having a fixed sort order, specific for each album. Some albums are sorted by the date the photo has been added, some are sorted by the date the photo has been taken, with the newest at the bottom
To view photos at a custom order, you have to create your own albums.
